"Moonlight Madness" by Teri DeSario - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Teri DeSario’s “Moonlight Madness” was an underground track produced by H.W. Casey (K.C. and The Sunshine Band). This track became a favorite among disc jockey collectors even though it received only a small amount of club play. It is a simple track with a haunting vocal and percolating synthesizer pumping up the energy.

The 1981 John Landis left-field horror film, “An American Werewolf In London” is the montage for this disco track – stars David Naughton and Jenny Agutter.

Mixie’s Boy Bar in Palm Springs is a wonderful place to meet friends for a drink and watch retro dance videos. Mixie is a wonderful host, and is at the controls “mixing” in a collage of fantastic dance videos on weekends. On Saturday, April 27th I had the honor of meeting dance music talents, Paul Parker, Cynthia Manley and producer, John Hedges and friends, Ken Crivello and Patrick in this venue.

Thanks to John Hedges (Sylvester, Fever, Lisa, Jo-Lo, Sean Benson, Aragorn Ballroom Orchestra, Slick, Patrick Cowley) many of the gold records of disco artists are being displayed at Mixie’s Boy Bar (http://www.mixiesboybar.com).

Here are a few pictures of the group and this wonderful evening of disco’s greatest energy “together again”.

“Extraterrestrial Lover” by Sylvia Love - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Sylvia Love (Chantal Pierre) has 2 places in disco history – “Instant Love” and “Extraterrestrial Lover”. Produced by Trevor Vallis in 1979, these tracks exude the energy that disco music is all about. Flowing and lovely, both tracks have a sensual feel with both Sylvia’s vocals and Trevor’s keyboards and arrangements that are surely tailored as for a dance floor at 5 AM.

This style of disco music has always held a special place in my world and dance floor – weaving an imaginary place and theme with pulsating energy lightly accenting a make-believe journey.

Using the 1984 John Carpenter film, “Starman” as the eye candy here is a perfect match for “Extraterrestrial Lover”. The story outlines a starship from outer space, which crash lands to avoid an attack from a military aircraft, and a visitor is introduced to a young woman. After taking on the characteristics of her deceased husband through DNA from a locket of hair she becomes fearful at first, but then realizes the special event will bring her heart closer again to the memory of her loved one.

Note: I can remember a visitor to my booth back in 1984 while playing this Sylvia’s track and saying that the song was a take off of “E.T.” – when actually this song was released in 1979. Long before our little extraterrestrial friend found Reese's Pieces.

Chantal Pierre recorded “Instant Love” and “Extraterrestrial Lover” with producer Trevor Vallis in 1979. Both tracks have become underground disco gems.

The mystique of both disco music and the artist behind the scenes.

Chantal shares her experience as an artist and now realizing that a lasting canvas of work is still worth listening to…

Please tune in – it will interesting to hear of the music industry of the late 70’s and how disco music is still with us because of the lasting impression and beauty of it’s sound – “Instant Love” and “Extraterrestrial Lover” are songs that pulsated throughout after hours clubs in the US throughout the mid 80’s. And today are still wonderfully arranged and sung tracks.

“Just Blue” by Space - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1976 science fiction film, “Logan’s Run” has been a favorite among many with its credulous theme. It is the 23rd century and living in this time is like living a dream – fulfilling all of your every fantasy – but you only live until you are 30 years of age. At that time you are literally “burnt out.”

The visuals from “Logan’s Run” were quite advanced for 1976 – many will find them an elementary as some monsters movies of the 60’s compared to today. But the surrealistic technology advancement works well with the tame visuals. Directed by Michael Anderson.

Space’s “Just Blue” has been placed over these images to create the same effect that the LP did for many forerunners of new age and disco themed music. Produced by Jean-Philippe Iliesco and composed and arranged by Didier Marouani – this follow up LP to their “Deliverance” project left dancers in a futuristic arena of sound and imaginary themes. Since they were one of the first to examine this musical trip their keyboards and arrangements are hailed as some of the greatest in disco.

"Life At The Outpost" by Skatt Bros. - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The Skatt Bros LP “Strange Spirits” was another project produced by Willi Morrison & Ian Guenther (THP Orchestra, Duncan Sisters, American Fade, Shawnye Jackson, Grand Tour, Sticky Fingers, Southern Exposure, Ramming Speed). This LP marked a transition for the duo from hardcore disco sound to a more rock edged dance energy.

“Life At The Outpost” is a track which stood out from the LP as a familiar vocal arrangement similar to Village People – as a matter a fact the band is categorized as the Canadian-straight version of VP. The song is fun and has a lighter side to it – as this Video Mix.

“Blazing Saddles” from 1974 takes the place for our images in this mix – one of Mel Brooks’ most successful comedies. Stars Harvey Korman, Madeline Kahn, Cleavon Little and a sneak peak at Mel himself.

"If My Friends Could See Me Now" by Linda Clifford - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Linda Clifford's "If My Friends Could See Me Now" is a monumental disco track!

I can remember seeing Linda on a television special by Don Kirshner back in 1978 and realized that disco music had arrived. This remains one of the finest productions (Gil Askey) of the disco era and perhaps one of the most fitting performances by Linda Clifford, a very talented artist.

I was a big fan of "Sweet Charity" since I was 15, so hearing a disco version as a teenager with an arrangement completely new and invigorating was quite a thrill. The lyrics were written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields and this dance version maintains the feel of the Broadway original with a whole new emphasis of interpretation.

“Passion” by The Flirts - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1982 camp dance track, “Passion” by The Flirts is brought back into it’s place with scenes form the 1981 suspense film, “Body Heat” starring Kathleen Turner and William Hurt. Lawrence Kasden directed this sensual drama, which outlines the involvement of a married woman who takes a lover, and he becomes the mouse for this cat.

The disco track “Passion” was also one of produced, artist Bobby Orlando’s first attempts to create his early 80’s dance sound. It was quite successful by being very simple and laying keyboard tracks that emphasized the motive for his rhythm and melodies. Along with the vocals of The Flirts (Andrea, Rebecca & Holly) this song moved many of dance floors – returned the period to a higher energy of sleaze with a touch of the nu-wave glam.

I have used some of the erotic and quite controversial moments of the film to create an outline for the play or this track.

“Mirror, Mirror” by Diana Ross – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Diana Ross returned in 1981 with an LP titled “Why Do Fools Fall In Love” featuring the track, “Mirror, Mirror”. This song was a funky as Ross’ earlier session with Chic producers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards in 1980.

The project was produced by Diana Ross and was a big part of the dance fusion of the early 80’s and was co-written by Michael Sembello (“Maniac”)

Taking the Walt Disney children’s classic, “Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs” from the Brothers Grimm Fairy tale collection and placing it below the theme of “Mirror, Mirror” was an easy one and flowed wonderfully. This animated classic was released originally in 1938 and had some of the most frightening visions as well as the most sinister figure, The Wicked Queen.

This idea came about thanks to Ken Emmons – connecting the two became my job. I hope it entertains you as well.

'Ultra Warp (Final Conflict)' by Laser-Cowboys - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Taking the 1984 Italian dance track, "Ultra Warp (Final Conflict)" into a Video Mix with the 1973 MGM science-fiction film, "Westworld" was a thought I had. The concept of a playground where robots fulfill our every need is a great one - until something goes wrong.

This film was frightening for it's time and I would not doubt that a remake would be haunting us soon with an advanced digital production. The original was cast with Yul Brenner as “The Gunslinger”, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin.

The Laser-Cowboys are a fantastic electronic studio band produced by Mach II - this was their first release from 1984 and reminds me of Ennio Morricone's theme from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" - very haunting.

“I’m A Man’ by Macho – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1969 film, “Midnight Cowboy” is a story of a small town cowboy who move to New York to become a hustler – his demeanor at the opening of our story says everything about a belief in machismo and the reflection of his self-power.

I have taken the energy from this tale and weaved it closely with the disco classic, “I’m A Man” by Macho from 1978 – Produced and composed by Mauro Malavasi – it is a cover from the Spencer Davis Group original released 1967.
Tom Savarese executed the extended mix.

Jon Voight is definitely taking this role to the extreme with his bold performance which I believe assisted this film in winning the 1969 award for best picture. It was originally rated as a “X” due to much of the content and then later changed to a strong “R” rating – since no-one wanted to uphold an Academy Award winning film being “X” rated.

“It’s A War” by Kano - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1980 dance floor hit, “It’s A War” by Kano was a powerhouse track that featured some incredible outlines for a classic dance track. Produced by Italian producers L. Ninzatti, M. Bosanto and S. Pulga.

I have taken the 1970 adventure film, “Voyage Into Space” from Japan - featuring “Giant Robot” and young spy, Johnny Sakko – the film is a fantasy epic where a young boy becomes a spy to fight against the evil forces that threaten the planet earth. A few monsters are conjured up to add to the excitement.

With a bit of editing and reworking the footage I have made “It’s A War” one for the big guys!

“Make That Feeling Come Again” by Beautiful Bend - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Blending the beauty of Brian De Palma’s 1975 mystery, “Obsession” and Boris Midney’s production of Beautiful Bend’s “Make That Feeling Come Again” was an attempt to bring a flowing canvas of orchestral disco and cinematic visions.

Both pieces are the most incredible in artistry. I have placed the classic 1978 disco piece “Make That Feeling Come Again” with “Obsession” to coincide with Cliff Robertson’s obsession with his wife’s death and the need to bring her image and her feeling back to life. Geneviève Bujold is placed in this masterpiece of images and a style of disco music that created by Boris Midney by using technical wizardry along with classical string sections and wonderful melodies that are interrupted by percussion breaks and haunting effects. Very similar along the outline of what the film “Obsession” is about.

Taking the finale of the film and the last chorus of Midney’s wonderful piece I feel are the perfect closing for sound and pictures.

Combining 1967 action-camp film, “Hot Rods To Hell” and Giorgio Moroder’s Munich Machine’s “Love Fever” from 1978 create an explosion of hot rods and hot chicks. Vocals are sung by Chris Bennett.

The pulsating disco rhythm of “Love Fever” well describes what a teenager must go through when desire calls. This is a fun track and some great footage to match staring Dana Andrews, Jean Crain, Mimsy Farmer and Paul Bertoya.

If you haven’t revved up your motor yet, you will!

“Upside Down” by Vanessa - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Vanessa’s 1981 club hit, “Upside Down” is recreated with scenes from the 1972 disaster epic, “The Poseidon Adventure” – it was not quite the “Hell” that it was the first time!

The disco track gives opportunity for more celebration and a lighter side of the upturned ocean liner.

Being a child of the 70’s disaster films were quite the fascination – this was my chance to take the film into a whole new feel. The disco track “Upside Down” by Vanessa was produced by Martin Duiser and was one of the rare high-energy disco tracks of 1981 – so it is highly one of the most enduring for myself.

I hope you can appreciate the light hearted comedy and yet the drama that is displayed here – all for fun and dancing of course.

The 1967 camp-cult classic, “Valley Of the Dolls” is paired up here with Sylvester’s very-powerful disco hit, “Stars” from 1979. The impact is an incredible arena of talent, promise, stardom and of course the inevitable fallen star.

“Valley Of The Dolls” is one of my all-time favorite films and displays the drama of how success is a one-way road leading back to where you came. Stars Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke, Sharon Tate, and Susan Hayward as Helen Lawson.
