Everywhere A Sign: "Horny Herbs"?

Too funny!

Ocean Beach, San Diego is a beach community - pretty kick back and cool area of town. Lots of grassroots people.

On my visit to the puppies vet I spotted a sign that I had to snap a picture of. Too funny!

REISSUE: "Get The Look" by New Paradise - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

New Paradise were known in the late 70's as Paradise Birds - in the 80's producer Leo Carrier gave them the title New Paradise. One of the best known singles is "Get The Look" from 1981.With the help of percolating synthesizers and stark and deep keyboard arrangements this tracks moves fast and furious with much attitude and energy.

I have taken the 1990 documentary film, "Paris Is Burning" directed by Jennie Livingston and blended these energies together and looked to create homage to the fabulous world of fashion and drag. The film centers on the "ball culture" of New York City and the African American, Latino and transgender community, which created and keeps the runway alive.

A mixture of both vogue and pose are the energy to bring the track by New Paradise alive once again!

Hollyweird Drama: "The Day of the Locust" (1975) - The Big Premiere and Disaster (WARNING! VERY GRAPHIC VIOLENCE)

One of the strangest, yet intriguing outlines of behind the scenes of Hollywood ever! Climatic ending gives thought to the past on how certain minds viewed the movie machine. Great performance by Karen Black.

An art director in the 1930's falls in love and attempts to make a young woman an actress despite Hollywood who wants nothing to do with her because of her problems with an estranged man and her alcoholic father.

REISSUE: "Salsoul 3001" by The Salsoul Orchestra - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

From their 1976 LP "Nice 'N' Nasty" comes "Salsoul 3001" - Produced arranged conducted by Vincent Montana, Jr.

Disco music was always capable of taking past musical compositions and create a nice flowing orchestration of them. As with "Also sprach Zarathustra" composed by Richard Strauss in 1896. Deodato also recreated it with a funk and soul tempo and also won a Grammy for it in 1973.

The Salsoul Orchestra places it's disco arrangement with heavy percussion, horns and strings within this recording - it is magic for dancers.

Taking scenes from the zany 1981 film, "Caveman" starring Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid, Shelley Long and Barbara Bach. It was directed by Carl Gottlieb (screenplay for "Jaws"). It is a crazy look at prehistoric times - mixing man and dinosaurs together. Quite silly but a better look at our past than most traditional beliefs.

REISSUE: "Lucky Tonight" by Sarah Dash - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Sarah Dash began her career with LaBelle in 1971 - throughout time, her vocal talent always displayed the finest soul female notes - both power and energy. In 1978 her big disco hit, "Sinner Man" displayed Sarah well.

In 1983 Sarah paired up with disco producer, Patrick Cowley and released 2 singles on Megaton Records - "Low Down Dirty Rhythm" and "Lucky Tonight". Both tracks were successful in clubs and gave the pairing a lasting resonance with collectors and dancers.

I have taken "Lucky Tonight" a gave it an edge with the 1995 Martin Scorsese film, "Casino" starring Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone - I focused more on the Stone's character and decisions and gamble on luck she took through out the film - of course which eventually ends up with all of the chips down.

“The Beast In Me” by Bonnie Pointer – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Bonnie Pointer is one discos familiar voices and faces – her 1979 dance floor hit “Heaven Must Have Sent You” has been on Top 20 Disco Charts since its release and even today is a disco classic.

“The Beast In Me” is from her 1984 LP “If The Price Is Right” – it was also featured in a film the same year titled “Heavenly Bodies”.

I have taken the 1986 comedy/horror film “Vamp” starring Grace Jones, Chris Makepeace and Robert Rusler and placed the vampira pieces over the yearning and clawing feel of the song.

The film was directed by Richard Wenk

“(Carmen) Danger In Her Eyes” by Deborah Sasson & MCL – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Deborah Sasson along with MCL (Micro Chip League) producers Alexander Henninger and Ken Taylor recreate the tragedy of the 1845 novella Carmen and then 1875 opera. The 1989 techno track has the emphasis of a sledgehammer pounding out the drama until the last breath of our heroine’s saga.

I have taken the 1954 musical adaption by Otto Preminger, “Carmen Jones” which translates the film set during World War II and gives the vixen played by Dorothy Dandridge a take on the opera. The film also stars Harry Belafonte and Pearl Bailey.

Sci-Fi 70s: "The Food of the Gods" (1976) - Oh, Ratz!!

One of the American International drive in flicks whcih attempted to frighten but more or less brought laughter!

Morgan and his friends are on a hunting trip on a remote Canadian island when they are attacked by a swarm of giant wasps. Looking for help, Morgan stumbles across a barn inhabited by an enormous killer chicken. After doing some exploring, they discover the entire island is crawling with animals that have somehow grown to giant size. The most dangerous of all of these, however, are the rats, who are mobilizing to do battle with the human intruders.

REISSUE: "Sadie (She Smokes)" by Joe Bataan - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Joe Bataan and The Mestizo Band released their LP "Rap-O-Clap-O" in 1980. A time when disco music was shifting to a funkier edge. "Sadie (She Smokes)" is one of the more successful singles from the project. It features Jocelyn Brown on lead vocals and a few familiar vocal riffs.

I have taken the 1953 film "Miss Sadie Thompson" starring Rita Hayworth - a film that was produced during the "production code" period - so the character of Sadie Thompson was looked at as lewd and filthy by censorship boards and religious groups. Today, it bears a small resemblance to any. It just proves their lack of human understanding and righteousness.

Rita Hayworth is the vehicle of the film and my focus on this Disco Video Mix - the film was directed by Curtis Bernhardt.

REISSUE: "Tall In The Saddle" by Joel Diamond Experience - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Legendary producer, Joel Diamond created many fabulous disco compositions since the early 70's and onto the 80's. His label Silver Blue Records brought the dance floor many bands including The Invitations and many rare recordings by James Darren, Lorna Loft and Gloria Gaynor.

"Tall In The Saddle" is from his Joel Diamond Experience project from 1978 features a western backdrop with a clever disco twist. The track is a favorite among disco audiophiles for its zany and incredible layered production.

I have taken the 1985 Paul Bartel film, "Lust In The Dust" and created a canvas for the song. The film stars the Divine, Tab Hunter and Lainie Kazan - I believe it is a match made in the old west.

Pattie Brooks (Our Miss Brooks) became the #1entry on the disco charts in 1978 with he big one, "After Dark". This gave Ms. Brooks many opportunities to bring us her talents to the dance floor - including her 1979 LP "Party Girl" produced by Bunny Sigler.

REISSUE: "Vamos a La Playa" by Righeira - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Righeira is Stefano Righi and Stefano Rita

Their 1983 self-titled LP was an electronic dance project produced by La Bionda - the big hit, "Vamos a La Playa" was an instant hit in clubs. The translation "We Go To The Beach" was a perfect opportunity for me to use one of the 1960's teen romp films - "Beach Blanket Bingo" was the one!

Since "Vamos a La Playa" has such a festive tone many of the dancers and excitement of these films were the exact element for the tone. The film was shot at Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu, California

The film stars Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Deborah Walley, Harvey Lembeck, John Ashley, Jody McCrea and Linda Evans. It was directed by William Asher (of television's "Bewitched")
