"White Rabbit" by David Diebold & Kim Cataluna - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Walt Disney's 1951 cartoon classic "Alice In Wonderland" was refreshed in Jefferson Airplane's 1967 "White Rabbit" - it was said that Grace Slick (lead vocalist of this version) stated it was intended as a slap towards parents who read their children such stories in which the main character uses several drug-like substances in order to change herself.

Aside form all of the deep thinking of how, when and why - they did create a rock classic.

In 1990 San Francisco dance artist, David Diebold recorded the track again and gave it a new dance floor feel. I have taken the LP version and placed visuals from the Disney classic to bring to life the field of imagination from the story and the fascination we have held onto for years with stories as such.

"Instant Love" by Sylvia Love - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Sylvia Love released her disco track, "Instant Love" in 1979 - produced by Trevor Vallis. Formulated in the D.D. Jackson "Automatic Lover" vein and using similar sequencers to Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" the track became more of an underground sensation.

In the early 80's many of after-hours dance clubs with jocks assembling music that was fitting for dancing before the sun came up were placing this one on rotation. As the years have passed and much of the electronic influence in dance music has and continues to progress it is always interesting to look back at the pioneers who steered us in this direction.

"Queen Of Outer Space" is one of the campiest science fiction takes in 1958 - starring Zsa Zsa Gabor and Eric Fleming leading the adventure. The story line is simple - the planet "Venus" (the planet of love) has kept men away until this a spaceship of 3 eligible bachelors convinces then that a waste of beauty is no good.

This video mix salutes the “Cult Camp Classic” films and also the same sound in disco music, which follows along the outlines.

“Sunset People” by Donna Summer - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Donna Summer’s “Sunset People” is one of those disco tracks that makes you feel as though something is happening – it caused quite a stir on dance floors. This classic mover is in the tradition of Giorgio Moroder’s progressive keyboard and sequencer sound of the 70’s. After hearing this track – it is no wonder that he is the “Godfather Of Electronic Disco”.

Placing Gloria Swanson along with this dynamite track was an idea I got when a good friend, Charles mentioned that “Sunset Boulevard” would be great to use in a Video Mix. So Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard unite once again in this edit.

"Remember Me" by Cynthia Manley - Video by Glenn Rivera

From the 1981 LP “Boys Town Gang” featuring Cynthia Manley on lead vocals is the classic-disco track, “Medley:’ Remember Me’/’Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’”. Bill Motley whom was determined to bring back disco to the 80’s with great success produced this track.

I have removed the track, “Remember Me” from the medley and created a stand alone hit and worked closely with Cynthia Manley along with Gary Rader (www.raderfilms.com) and my partner and producer, Ken Emmons to create an emotional and refreshing video.

The video was shot here in San Diego at Presidio Park and features some beautiful shots of the Junípero Serra Museum. The interior club shots were shot on March 8th at Dream Lounge – thanks to Rick Shezoray, Johnny Valentino, George Flashback, Al “Liquid” Sky and Tommy Arenas of “Back To Disco” (http://www.backtodisco.com) who allowed us to utilize their club for these shots. If you are in the Los Angeles area, I urge you to check out this club!

Shot on March 22, 2008 (see photos) along with Gary Rader on cameras, Anthony Gioffre as grip and Nancy Raye as assistant to Cynthia.

Thanks to Ken Emmons for allowing me the time and love – Cynthia Manley for her talent and friendship – Gary Rader for his talent and great assistance – Anthony Gioffre, Nancy Raye and the guys from Back To Disco.com

"Future World" by Ganymed - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1973 science fiction film, “Soylent Green” is paired with the 1979 German disco band hit, “Future World” – a whole new look on the Stanley Greenberg screenplay based on the Harry Harrison novel. The planet is in the “over population” stage and the environment has been effect by the greenhouse effect making the temperature reach unbearable highs.

The film starred Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young, Brock Peters, Joseph Cotton, Chuck Connors, Paula Kelly and was the last film for Edward G. Robinson.

Although Ganymed’s tune outlines an “Automatic Lover” style lyric, I have paired it with some of “Soylent Green’s” grayish and disturbing scenes to give it a new contrast.

The song was a minor hit here in the US as it appeared at the end of the disco wave – but I understand the band was still a bit hit in Germany and surrounding areas. Their sound was recognizable and in the early 80’s a must for after-hours dancing or drinking. Great synthetic feel.

“Somewhere” by Vicki Shepard – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Vicki Shepard created a high energy classic in 1989 with a disco cover of Stephen Sondheim’s “Somewhere” – this track manages to resurface in clubs even today. The original release marked a return to high energy basics with a mix by Steven Von Blau. Vocals by Vicki also helped to keep this track alive since it’s release - she is a very talented lady. Taking many of the beautiful visions from the 1998 Polygram film, “What Dreams May Come” with Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra I have piece together these wonderful masterpieces.

Hoping to create an outline for the “gift of life” - this Video Mix is dedicated to the energy that keeps our lives happy and knowing that in our minds we are all where we need to be.

“Greyhound Bus” by Gregg Diamond’s Hardware – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Greyhound Bus” by Gregg Diamond’s Hardware – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Gregg Diamond produced some of disco’s most prestigious music – from projects by George McCrae, Gloria Gaynor and Andrea True Connection. Some of his best works were his studio productions by Bionic Boogie, Star Cruiser and Hardware. This cut recorded under Hardware is from the LP featuring the single, “Shinin’” which was the only track released as a 12” single.

Being a big fan of Diamond’s productions I found his creativity as a writer to be equally as interesting and "left field" – songs like “Greyhound Bus” were as playful with their words as they were musically. Hardware was more of a disco band style of sound so horns and his vocal ensemble were the focus here. Featuring Diva Gray, Gordon Grody and Jocelyn Brown on vocals as well as jazz musician, David Sanborn on saxophone.

Taking the 1976 film, “The Big Bus” which was a spoof on 70’s disaster films was an idea I got while thinking about the Gregg Diamond track. The film directed by James Frawley (credited with episodes of “That Girl”, “Magnum P.I.” and “The Muppet Movie” among many others) is an uproarious adventure with stars, Joseph Bologna, Stockard Channing, Ned Beatty, John Beck and Ruth Gordon. It is the first spoof on disasters which many mistake, “Airplane” as the forerunner. It was just as cleaver, but probably not as effective as “Airplane’s success. It was the ultimate disaster film parody of a nuclear powered bus is going Non-stop from New York to Denver – but not without a few problems.

"The Blue Danube Hustle" by Rice and Beans Orchestra - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1968 science fiction epic, “2001: A Space Odyssey” was my first influence as a child in both film and music. After spotting the soundtrack LP and being fascinated by the cover it became my first album. Soon after seeing the film in Cinerama I was completely in awe of its imagery and mystery.

I have taken the 1976 disco track “The Blue Danube Hustle” by Rice and Beans Orchestra (a disco version of Johann Strauss the Younger’s 1867 composition, also used in “2001”) and transformed it into a montage for scenes from the film. Produced by Pepe Luis Soto (Celi Bee, Roxie) and Tato Rossi

“2001: A Space Odyssey” was known for a “trip” for most young movie goers of the time – I remember hearing stories of youngsters smoking grass and viewing the film for the special effects. It holds a great deal of ideas and technological concepts, which make the film one of the most incredible experiences. I honor both the film and the wonderful waltz piece, “The Blue Danube” for being a gift to us.

'It's More Fun To Compute' by Kraftwerk - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

In 1977, Dean Koontz’s novel “Demon Seed” was transformed into a sci-fi thriller starring Julie Christie and Fritz Weaver. The story of the supercomputer, Proteus IV taking over one of it’s creators homes and using his wife to have a child of it’s own made a mark in the history of computer styled horror flicks.

Taking Kraftwerk’s progressive synthesizer and keyboard work into a Video Mix gives their track, “It’s More Fun To Compute” an opportunity to give the “Dancing Baby” some competition.

Some pretty funky and progressive video and audio track here.

“Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” by Boys Town Gang – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Irvin Kershner’s suspense film, “Eye’s Of Laura Mars” hit theatres in 1978 – it was a very nice combination of mystery, suspense, drama and some great disco music. The soundtrack featured Michael Zager Band’s “Let’s All Chant”, Odyssey’s “Native New Yorker” and KC and The Sunshine Band’s “Shake Your Booty.”

Visions of the film are expressed in this Video Mix with a completely new edge. Boys Town Gang’s disco classic, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” from 1981project produced by Bill Motley and sung by Jackson Moore. This music was geared to bring back a high-energy disco sound, which was lacking on major labels following the disco fade of the early 80’s. This is a simple, yet effective result.

The bizarre theme of “Laura Mars” is put more delicately to Boys Town Gang’s dance floor track with a bit more of Faye Dunaway’s magic presence. It may seem a bit odd but if you think carefully about the story for those who have seen it and understand the meaning, know that it is along the same parallel.

Dedicated to Cynthia Manley and her wonderful talent, which she continues to share with so many with a great heart and attitude.

“Phantom Of The Opera” by Harajuku – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

From the 1974 Brian DePalma film “Phantom Of The Paradise” is footage used for the 1992 Harajuku techno/dance track “Phantom Of The Opera”.

A match made for each others dramatic sound and visuals. The horror-thriller/musical film was a strange but great rock interpretation of the classic “Phantom” story. And now brought together with some of the most stunning scenes.

The Harajuku track was released on Dance Street Records and produced by The Really Useful Group – it is a cover of the Andrew Lloyd Webber piece.

Sharon Redd - "Behind The Scenes" - Directed by Glenn Rivera

In 1988, I had the privileged of meeting artist and performer, Sharon Redd – it was through her manager, Ruth Carson and I thank her so much to this day.

Sharon agreed to take a weekend and spend it with a few friends to work on a few amateur videos using a few of her great songs (“Beat The Street”, “We’re Friends Again” and “Love Insurance”). I was using a Betamax camera and the original editing was done of 2 VHS decks – wow! Now it has been remastered and re-edited.

This is the closing chapter of the now DVD project – it is following the shoot of “Love Insurance” at Presidio Park in San Diego.

Sharon is a beautiful soul – her passing in 1992 was sad. The fact that we have her music to mark her talent and life is wonderful. I still celebrate Ms. Redd as many do with her fantastic music. This footage shows how gracious she was and how “big” my 80’s hair was! (AND HOW TIGHT THOSE LEVIS WERE!!!)

Posted for Kerim – thank you posting Sharon’s music and the dedication.

“Something Scary” by Zsa Zsa LaBoum – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

In 1981 a film based on accounts from Carla Moran’s experiences with an unknown source is “The Entity”. The film was a good depiction of the possibilities of a negative energy crossing the parallel of human life. It was a very spooky outline and based on actual events.

READ MORE ON “THE ENTITY - CLICK HERE

Belgium New-Beat artist, Zsa Zsa LaBoum on Kaos Dance Records in 1988 – Produced by S.M. - this track is a strange one, but not too distant if you had any knowledge of the new beat dance movement in the late 80’s. Most tracks outlined intense synthesizers, weird subjects and play on words. I personally found it very interesting and innovative. From New Beat came Techno and Rave music.

“Something Scary” is an eerie tune – enough to give you goose bumps. The samples from “The Entity” – using Barbara Hershey’s voice, “I was alone in my room...Something grabbed me, and smothered me.” This always remained in my mind from the first time hearing it back in 1988 to someday create the outline for a video using excerpts – here it is. You will hear the word “acid” repeated constantly throughout – this influenced by the Acid House style of music, which is the predecessor of New Beat.

A bit on the dark-side it works the realm of the sound of New Beat in a mysterious way. Once again, the transition of dance from disco to where it is today encompasses many genres of dance music – this is one of them.

“Earthquake” by The Flirtations – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1974 Universal disaster epic, "Earthquake" starring Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner and Genevieve Bujold is blended with the 1983 dance floor hit, "Earthquake" by The Flirtations - produced by Ian Anthony Stephens and Winston Sela.

This track is quite a tribute along with the film and still moves along well with those classic synthesized strings and a pounding energy.

I have blended some of the drama and the "shakes" from the film to match the power of this disco/high energy classic!

"Supermodel (You Better Work)" by Rupaul - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

In 1992 entertainer, Rupaul rattled the clubs with a clever house track and video production of "Supermodel (You Better Work)". Produced by Eric Kupper this track was dressed to "kill".

I have taken the John Waters' underground film classic "Female Trouble" with Divine and created a whole new purpose for the Rupual hit. Divine never looked better and Rupaul's words never in-sync so appropriate. The camp is quite fabulous - it has always been my favorite "candy".

“Love Rollercoaster” by Ohio Players – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

It was 1975 and soul music was gettin’ real funky – Ohio Players merged on the scene in 1971 originally and then again in 1974 with their big hit, “Fire” – but it wasn’t until 1975 when their dance track, “Love Rollercoaster” made them apart of soul/dance music history.

You just can’t get any funkier than this. Cow bells. Whoppin’ big guitars. And keyboards that sound straight out of a 70’s reunion. Great dance track to remind us of how dance music has changed and yet somehow remains the same.

I have created a montage of scenes from Universal’s “Rollercoaster” which was released in 1977 and was featured in first release in “Sensurround” which was created for the film “Earthquake” where a low frequency sound system would give a bass rumble to the floor and vibrate each viewer. It wasn’t as effective in “Rollercoaster” as in “Earthquake” – but still quite some fun!
