REISSUE: "You Can't Turn Me Off (In The Middle Of Turning Me On)" by High Ingery - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

High Inergy is a female ensemble from the Motown Family who were styled after The Supremes - and even take their name from a Supreme's LP. The group shared a success with their 1977 LP "Turnin' On" which included the single "You Can't Turn Me Off (In The Middle Of Turning Me On)" which reached #2 on the soul charts and #12 on the pop charts.

The group recorded several projects up to 1983 and then disbanded - however their contribution with "You Can't Turn Me Off" keeps their memory alive forever in disco land.

I have taken the 1987 romantic comedy "Mannequin" and paired up the track for a spin with Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall. It is a silly film about a window dresser who falls for a mannequin who comes to life thanks to an old Egyptian spell. The romance works well with the flow of the song.

REISSUE: "Willie and The Hand Jive" by Rinder and Lewis - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Rinder and Lewis released a project titled “Warriors” in 1979 – their work has always been instrumental in formulating disco music during the mid and late 70's. Discognosis, El Coco, In Search Of Orchestra, Le Pamplemousse, Saint Tropez, and Tuxedo Junction were some of their outstanding contributions to the dance era. “Warriors” was a disco venture, which outlined a few hits from the 60’s dance floor – luckily they took on a cover of Johnny Otis’ “Willie and The Hand Jive” – but on disco terms. The percolating synthesizers and percussion work this track as if it were created for the disco beats and along a persuasive vocal.

This has always been one track that I honored as deep-rooted disco.

Taking the 1988 John Waters’s comedy “Hairspray” and applying it to this track hit me and is now a new take on 60’s meets 70’s. Ricki Lake, Divine, Jerry Stiller, Deborah Harry, Ruth Brown and Sonny Bono are among the talent that has kept this film alive even today. Waters created a true classic with this project.

REISSUE: “Small Town Lover” by Cheri – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Cheri is Rosalind Hunt (Geraldine Hunt’s daughter – Freddie James’ sister) and Amy Roslyn – a dance duo from Montreal. Their 1982 hit “Murphy’s Law” rolled out the welcome mat on dance floors for future promise.
Their second album titled “Low Stew” from 1983 contained a single title, “Small Town Lover” – a funk-disco track with a mellow and hypnotic groove. It did quite well on disco radio shows and is now an underground old-school favorite.

I was requested to use the film 1988 “Big Business” for a video mix and paired the song up for a “small town” reprise. The film stars Bette Midler and Lily Thrombin as double-twins who are mixed up at birth in a small town and later reunited in the “big city” for chaos and fun. It is an extremely hilarious film and I have taken parts and pieces to reshape the film for this Disco Video Mix.

REISSUE: “Let The Good Times Roll” by Fern Kinney - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Fern Kinney made a bit break in discotheques with her 1979 hit, “Groove Me” - an electronic cover of King Floyd’s classic track. In 1981 Fern released her second album titled “Fern” - a track that was a b-side to her single “Love Me Tonight” was another cover - this time Shirley and Lee’s rock ‘n’ roll hit “Let The Good Times Roll” - the arrangement was a bouncy spaced-out feel complete with lunar lading effects.

I have taken the 1973 film by George Lucas “American Graffiti starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul LeMat, Cindy Williams and Harrison Ford and matched the nostalgia to a different beat. The film is a classic among rock ‘n’ roll fans and now a new outline gives it a new life.

“Touch Me” by New Baccara – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

New Baccara is Marie Mendiola and Maryse Peres – a disco group from Euro-disco producer Luis Rodriguez – also assisted by songwriter Reinhardt Frantz who produced Sweet Connection, Casablanca and Pepper Girls.

Their 1989 single “Touch Me” is a high-energy erotic feel dance number which always worked well for me during peak hour on the dance floor. I have taken the 12” “Erotic Dance Mix” and created a Disco Video Mix using scenes from the 1995 erotic-thriller from director William Friedkin, “Jade”.

The film stars David Caruso and Linda Fiorentino – the time-line to this film is “some fantasies go too far.” I have used some of the sexy scenes and also the drama and crime segments to move the disco song along in a new pace and feeling.

CLOSET COMEDY!: "In & Out" Kevin Kline and Debbie Reynolds

One of my favorite comedies from 1987 - it is hard to believe that "Don't Ask Don't Tell" was displayed here way back when!

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

In & Out is a 1997 American romantic comedy film directed by Frank Oz and starring Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack, Matt Dillon, Tom Selleck, Debbie Reynolds, Bob Newhart, and Wilford Brimley. The screenplay was written by screenwriter Paul Rudnick. Joan Cusack was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.

The film was inspired by Tom Hanks's tearful speech when he accepted his 1994 Oscar (for his role in Philadelphia), in which he mentioned his high-school drama coach Rawley Farnsworth, and his former classmate John Gilkerson, "two of the finest gay Americans, two wonderful men that I had the good fortune to be associated with". The film became one of mainstream Hollywood's few attempts at a comedic "gay movie" of its era, and was widely noted at the time for a 10-second kiss between Kevin Kline and Tom Selleck.

REISSUE: “Sunset People” by Donna Summer - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Donna Summer’s “Sunset People” is one of those disco tracks that makes you feel as though something is happening – it caused quite a stir on dance floors. This classic mover is in the tradition of Giorgio Moroder’s progressive keyboard and sequencer sound of the 70’s. After hearing this track – it is no wonder that he is the “Godfather Of Electronic Disco”.

Placing Gloria Swanson along with this dynamite track was an idea I got when a good friend, Charles mentioned that “Sunset Boulevard” would be great to use in a Video Mix. So Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard unite once again in this edit.

REISSUE: "It's A War" by Kano - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1980 dance floor hit, "It's A War" by Kano was a powerhouse track that featured some incredible outlines for a classic dance track. Produced by Italian producers L. Ninzatti, M. Bosanto and S. Pulga.

I have taken the 1970 adventure film, "Voyage Into Space" from Japan - featuring "Giant Robot" and young spy, Johnny Sakko -- the film is a fantasy epic where a young boy becomes a spy to fight against the evil forces that threaten the planet earth. A few monsters are conjured up to add to the excitement.

With a bit of editing and reworking the footage I have made "It's A War" one for the big guys!

AUDIO TOYS: ION Turntable with USB Flash Drive

I just received a toy (I assume) that looked like fun to me. It is the "ION Turntable with USB Flash Drive" - it offers a transfer of vinyl directly to a flash drive.

You can then transfer the files you record to either your iPOD or edit on a progam (PC or MAC) which is included on disc.

The look of the unit attracted me! It is quite cool.

I just completed a test - to hear this file (which I recorded fromt he player unit and them opened the flash drive on my computer - THIS IS AN UNCLEANED MP3 - I think it sound quite well.

The recording is side one of Tangerue's LP - side one - DOWNLOAD AND LISTEN AT: http://www.glennrivera.com/files/REC001.MP3

To see video of the process I took here - click or go to: http://www.glennrivera.com/files/ion.wmv

This is a pretty cool toy - and awesome looking. It is plastic and much like a novelty item - but fun to have if you love vinyl or music as much as I do.

The specs are below - or at: http://sellout.woot.com/Blog/ViewEntry.aspx?Id=22928

For the record?

As an avid vinyl collector, I can’t wait to render my collection obsolete.

I’m celebrating Record Store Day 2012 by buying a bunch of records at my local shop, bringing them back home, and digitizing them. That should finally prove exactly how obsolete record stores are. It’ll be a real stick in the eye of my quirky neighborhood shop when I burn the physical records in effigy after converting their entire store to a hand-held USB flash drive.

Thankfully, the ION Audio IT28 Quick Play Flash Conversion Turntable will finally let me destroy every record I own like the refuse it is. I mean, even the most die-hard record collector will tell you that – deep down- they really hate records. Records are big, easy to break, kind of stupid looking…I could go on.

The retro-vinyl days are done and I’m moving on. That’s why I’m thrilled that the ION Audio Turntable converts LPs to uncompressed WAV files. Yeah, yeah, I like “warmth” and “punchiness” and “crackle” and all that other vinylphile stuff – that’s exactly why I’m converting it all into a series of 1s and 0s. I only look forward to the day when we can do that with the entire range of human emotions, too.

Well, Record Store Day isn’t until tomorrow. So I’m going to head down to the funky local bookstore, scan all their books, and then burn them. Who wants s’mores?

REISSUE: “Conquest Of The Stars” by Space Project – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Space Project is Canadian producers, Dominic Sciscente (Black Light Orchestra, Alma Faye Brooks) and Michel Daigle (Voggue) – one of the big commercial Euro-style/symphonic disco recordings of 1978.

“Conquest Of The Stars” is the opening piece from the album which brings to mind soundtracks from the space flick movement of the late 70’s ala “Star Wars” and television shows like “Battlestar Gallactica” – and although many of this trend many have been formulated following Meco’s big disco “Star Wars” piece I believe it may have been the love for the space adventure film that kept it alive more than anything.

I have taken the1996 Tim Burton action/comedy “Mars Attacks” with an all-star cast including Jack Nicholson, Pierce Bronson, Sarah Jessica Parker and Glenn Close (with a cameo by Tom Jones) and paired the two to create an odd mix of Martians and humans defending their planet. It is quite a film that works in a satiric

REISSUE: “High On Mad Mountain” by The Mike Theodore Orchestra - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The Mike Theodore Orchestra is known for their 1977 disco piece “The Bull” - it was their second project “High On Mad Mountain” that hit the disco target in the center mark - fusing their soulful rhythms and disco orchestration. Produced by Mike Theodore known for his productions and creation C.J. and Company (“Devil’s Gun”), Dennis Coffey (“Scorpio”), and Detroit Emeralds (“Feel The Need”).

“High On Mad Mountain” is a majestic disco production with a full ensemble of horn, bassoon’s, French horns and funky guitars - it really is an adventure all on its own.

I have taken the 1937 film “Lost Horizon” starring Ronald Colman, Jane Wyatt and John Howard and placed the magnificent story of the Himalayan Mountain valley land of Shangri-La into a Disco Video Mix. The story fits quite well with the danger, lure and excitement of this mystical place.

A LITTLE LOONEY? : "Porky Pig's Feat" starring Porky Pig

Porky Pig's Feat is a one-reel animated cartoon short subject in the Looney Tunes series, produced in black-and-white and released to theatres on June 13, 1943 by Warner Bros. Pictures. It was directed by Frank Tashlin with musical supervision by Carl Stalling, and produced by Leon Schlesinger. Originally released in black and white, clips of a digitally-colored version of the cartoon were seen in bonus features for the first two Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD box sets, before finally being issued in its original monochrome form on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 3 DVD.

This cartoon was colorized in 1968 (just after Seven Arts Productions, successor to Guild Films, to whom the black-and-white cartoon library had been sold some time before, acquired Warner Bros.) by having every other frame traced over onto a cel. Each redrawn cel was painted in color and then photographed over a colored reproduction of each original background. The animation quality dropped considerably from the original version with this method. The cartoon was colorized again in 1990, this time with a computer adding color to a new print of the original black and white cartoon. This preserved the quality of the original animation (the end result also resembled the actual color cartoons released around the same time).

The title is a play on the food, "pigs feet."

This was the first Schlesinger cartoon directed by Tashlin after his return to the studio following a five-year absence for stints at the Disney and Screen Gems studios. It is also the final appearance of Porky Pig in a black-and-white cartoon.

Produced by Leon Schlesinger

REISSUE: "Great Expectations" by First Choice - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

First Choice are the soul divas of disco music. Their catalogue of music is overwhelming when you place their talents are the realm of disco music and it's history.

Their 1979 LP "Hold Your Horses" is one of the pinnacle moments in dance music. From this project came "Great Expectations" - a track about the lure of a love relationship and the promise of lasting celebration. It was this production, which also gave disco a full arrangement of strings, horns and rhythm to call a disco staple.

My love for both cinema and disco music are combined to it's fullest as I have taken the Charles Dickens's classic novel turned film in 1946 "Great Expectations" - the film stars John Mills, Anthony Wager, Jean Simmons, Valerie Hobson and Alec Guinness - it was directed by David Lean and produced by Ronald Neame (of "The Poseidon Adventure").

Although the tale is focused on social classes and romance it fits well with the drama of the strings and outline of First Choice's disco classic.

Ultimate released their second LP featuring the track "Secret Agent Man" (a remake of the Johnny Rivers song from 1964) -- this track went un-noticed by many dance floors since the track was only 3 minutes long. I have taken the number and extended it for a mild ReStructure and for eye candy edited scenes from 1966 action film, "The Silencers" with Dean Martin.

The song comes alive with Dean Martin, Cyd Charisse and Stella Stevens guiding the action from disco to super-spy video.
