REISSUE: “Tonight” by Gloria Gaynor – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Gloria Gaynor’s “Tonight” is a cover from the 1957 Broadway musical “West Side Story” and was featured on her “I Have A Right” LP from 1979. The masterful Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris production also features Doc Severinson on trumpet. This is a hidden treasure of Gloria's for many.

I have taken the theatrical film version from 1961 and created a Disco Video Mix encompassing the wonderment of the love between our lead characters and giving them a groove between both love and their first dance.

The film version stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris – it was directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise.

REISSUE: “Living On Video” by Trans-X - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 80’s came alive on dance floors with tracks like “Living On Video” by Trans-X (Cerstin “Cessy” Strecker and Pascal Languirand). The 1983 hit brought a new element to electronic music by bridging the new wave edge along with disco electronic synthesizers. It was an exciting time.

I have placed the 1983 David Cronenberg horror-film “Videodrome” starring James Woods and Deborah Harry (Blondie) along with this track - this film was requested to be used by Jussi K. and I had to wait for the right mood and track to accent it with. The film depicts a cable-TV programmer who become involved in ultimate programming fashion that brings video literally into his life.

It is a graphic piece so beware of your eyes! Dedicated to Jussi K.

REISSUE: "Hit 'N Run Lover" by Carol Jiani - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Carol Jiani's "Hit 'N Run Lover" is a disco classic. The track was released in 1981 and made a place on every dance floor from the first beat.

Produced by Joe La Greca and arranged by Denis LaPage - is was no wonder how this track was able to create magic in discotheques.

I had always envisioned the song as a theme from a James Bond film - it is now presented along with the 1974 film, "The Man With The Golden Gun" starring Roger Moore, Christopher Lee and Britt Ekland. Directed by Guy Hamilton

The theme moves along with the spy action and also allows Carol the opportunity to make the drama her own.

REISSUE: "San Salvador" by Azoto - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Celso Valli created Azoto in 1978 with their first LP "Music Makers Ltd." - it was Italo-disco of the late 70's. A formulation of synthesizers, strings, bass and heavy percussion.

The follow up LP "Disco Fizz" was released in 1979 featuring several dance floor classics: "Anytime Or Place", "Soft Emotion" and "San Salvador". All with the lyrical feel of pure Euro-disco and the edge, which Valli places in his compositions and productions.

"San Salvador" is featured in this Disco Video Mix along with scenes from the 1984 adventure film, "Romancing The Stone" starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito - a film about a romance novel caught in a dangerous adventure - and although the film takes place in Columbia, Ken and I agreed the festive nature belongs wonderfully with Azoto's Italo-disco classic.

The film was directed by Robert Zemeckis

REISSUE: "The Boys Come To Town" by Earlene Bentley - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Earlene Bentley was the high-energy sound from Ian Levine and with "The Boys Come To Town" from 1983 the dance floors were alive with excitement again.

The recording is one of the fondest of the time period where once again, disco music was headed in a whole new direction thanks to Ian Levine and Fiachra Trench. This one is full throttle from start to finish!

I have taken the 1949 musical "On The Town" and placed it within this Disco Video Mix - the film stars Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Betty Garrett, Ann Miller and Jules Munshin. There is enough of New York and "dance extravaganza" here to keep the night alive for weeks. It works well announcing the "ship is in" and enough said!

The film was directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly

THE BADGE OF MUSIC INVENTORY: The Wherehouse (1979 - 1982)

THE BADGE OF MUSIC INVENTORY: Found the old badge from my days of working for The Wherehouse – one of the biggest record and tape chains in the 70s and 80s. I worked at the Sports Arena Location here in San Diego, CA from 1979 – 1982. I was responsible for the disco section in 1979 and the dance section in 80-82.

Most of these memories are stock inventory and register. However, I do remember helping a great deal of club people coming in after the weekend asking for music – singing the wrong lyrics or humming the melody where I would have to figure out what they were looking for – some of the memories were “Let’s Go Dancing” by Rocky Mizell, “Take Your Time” by S.O.S. Band and “Boogie Woogie Dancing Shoes” by Claudja Barry (they were still asking for it in the early 80s!)

I also worked at Tower Records for a short time – but that was a political mess and although they stocked allot of disco music – and its own section – I found that they really hated disco music. I think it was due to the disco boom taking over the rock charts.

Note: Their ad-line was, "Where? At The Wherehouse!"

REISSUE: “Double Trouble” by Diva - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Joe La Greca along with Denis LaPage created Diva’s “Double Trouble” – a big hit for the Canadian disco movement in the early 80’s. Studio bands like Lime helped to bridge the sound of disco music in transition from Euro-disco to an electronic fusion.

“Double Trouble” is complete assembling of the La Greca and Le Page disco sound, which dominated dance floors throughout the 80’s.

I have taken Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers On A Train” from 1951 starring Farley Granger and Robert Walker to complete the statement from the disco track. Walker takes control of Farley’s life by murdering a nuisance wife who begins a tale of suspense and action. Anyone who has seen the film will understand what is intended here.

Myself being an extreme Hitchcock fan could not wait to use this masterpiece in a Video Mix.

Why You Shouldn’t Donate To The Salvation Army (VIDEO)

Why You Shouldn’t Donate To The Salvation Army (VIDEO)

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/12/19/should-you-donate-to-the-salvation-army-video/comment-page-1/#comment-65304

It’s that time of year again –  big red buckets everywhere and the ubiquitous bell-ringers. It’s pretty easy to throw a handful of change or maybe even a dollar or two in the bucket – it makes you feel good and helps the needy. Well, it you may not feel so good when you know that the Salvation Army might not be in it to help everyone.

The Salvation Army is not simply a charity: it is a religious sect. Their website gives this mission statement:

“The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. (emphasis added).”

Without discrimination? Salvation Army Captain Mike Parker, of Mankato, MN, told a reporter that the organization doesn’t discriminate, either in hiring or helping. But some evidence shows otherwise. Stories about their stance on and treatment of LGBT individuals have driven donations down from last year. The kettle campaign has attracted some notes rather than donations, explaining that the group’s stance on homosexuality is to blame. One bell-ringer in Victoria, British Columbia even held up a sign reading, “If you support gay rights, please do not donate.”

One man tells of how he and his partner were turned away from a shelter unless they would  agree to break up and “leave the ‘sinful homosexual lifestyle’ behind.”  They refused and ended up sleeping on the streets. This video gives other examples:

Earlier this year, a Salvation Army media relations director said that gays should be put to death. On an Australian radio show, Major Andrew Craibe told the two gay hosts of the show that it was “… a part of our belief system.” The Salvation Army officially distanced itself from Caibe’s statements but one of the group’s books,  Salvation Story: Salvationist Handbook of Doctrine, borrows heavily from Romans 1:18-32  and states:

“For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error … They know God’s decree, that those who practice such things deserve to die — yet they not only do them but even applaud others who practise them.”

While the Salvation Army says that it is not their policy to discriminate in such a way, they do acknowledge that some “isolated incidents” may have occurred. The SA is a huge operation, they say, and it’s difficult to police all 60,000 employees and 3.5 million volunteers. But up until last year the SA website had a position statement on homosexuality reading, in part, that gay Christians should “embrace celibacy as a way of life.” Salvation Army Maj. George Hood, the organization’s national community relations secretary, said it was “… a theological statement not meant for an external audience and it was creating a lot of confusion.” He continues, “A relationship between same-sex individuals is a personal choice that people have the right to make but from a church viewpoint, we see that going against the will of God.”

This stance has caused the tension between the Salvation Army and the LGBT community. The Salvation Army has claimed that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identification will not be allowed in determining who can benefit from their services, non-clergy employment and volunteerism. It has required any incidents that break this edict be reported immediately. The reaction from the LGBT community is a wait-and-see attitude, as they continue their campaign against donations to the Salvation Army.

REISSUE: "Think It Over" by Cissy Houston - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Cissy Houston (Whitney's mother) was a commodity in disco music during 1978 – her dance floor hit, “Think It Over” is a track that will be long remembered as one of the most powerful female defiance songs of the disco era. The best part is that is so hardcore and underground that most will never hear it, unless they have by some luck found it. In 2000 this track was covered by Jennifer Holiday, but the original with the Michael Zager production remains the best.

More of Michael Zager’s production magic of the disco era is displayed in both the orchestral arrangement and the dance mix.

I have taken a close call here by combining Adrian Lyne film “Fatal Attraction” from 1987 with Houston’s track. It is a bit heavy and to the point – but that’s what Cissy brings out in her wonderful vocal. I have attempted to keep away from the blood and gore of some scenes. Just a touch of the outline should keep any man monogamous. The film stars Michael Douglas, Glenn Close and Anne Archer.

A special thanks to all of you who make these videos work with your imagination and love for disco music. Keeping it alive is where it is.

REISSUE: “Christmas Medley ‘84” by Bonnie Forman - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Bonnie Forman was an underground high-energy artist of the early 80’s - her first single “Walk Away” gave her deep and raw vocals an arena for dance floors and later to be produced by Bobby Orlando. Her singles, “I Want A Man” and her cover of “I Only Have Eyes For You” received quite a bit of play during the high energy transition in the mid-80’s.

Her vocal on Bobby Orlando’s “Christmas Medley ‘84” are harsh, but perfect for this wicked Disco Video Mix -a little out of the ordinary and not quite the Christmas greeting you are familiar with.

I have taken the 1974 horror film “Black Christmas” and used some of the terrifying visuals to create a strange, but somehow connected mix. The films stars Olivia Hussey, Kier Dullea and Margot Kidder. It was directed by Bob Clark (“Porky’s) and is a cult horror-film favorite.

This combo is perhaps sinister and odd - but there are always those moments - and they are meant in my sometimes warped humor.

REISSUE: “Cerrone’s Paradise” by Cerrone – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Jean-Marc Cerrone is a moment in disco history that has to be heard. Cerrone gave Euro-disco the style and flavor which ignited dance floors into hours of non-stop dancing.

“Cerrone’s Paradise” is his second project from 1977 that is the full orchestra and funky guitars and percussion which drive the European flavor.

I have combined Cerrone’s masterpiece along with the 2001 musical-drama, “Moulin Rouge” starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Pieces of the elaborate stage performances and romance outline the disco piece well.
