REISSUE: "Gigolo" by Mary Wells - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Mary Wells ("My Guy", "The One Who Really Loves You") returns in 1981 with a slick dance track called, "Gigolo". From her LP, "In And Out Of Love" comes this single.

It is one of those club tracks that will always catch your fingertips (snapping) and hips moving - a great disco number for a Motown Diva.

I have taken the 1980 Paul Schrader film, "American Gigolo" and moved onto a visual medley of Richard Gere - the "American Gigolo" himself. The film also stars Lauren Hutton. It is a "business is pleasure" montage.

Thanks to Loulou from The Netherlands for giving me the concept for this Disco Video Mix.

REISSUE: “Mah-Nah-Mah-Nah” by Lipstique – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Lipstique is a studio project from disco producer Jürgen S. Korduletsch – who also gave us Claudia Barry, Ronnie Jones, Gaz, Disco Circus, Mick Rowley, Mascara and Araxis. The first album titled “At The Discotheque” (a cover of Chubby Checker’s 1965 flip-side 45 track) – arranged as a disco medley with a few new instrumental and vocal segments added. The album was a huge hit in clubs and still rings true to the disco period.

“Mah-Nah-Mah-Nah” is another cover of Piero Umiliani’s 1968 composition which originally appeared in an Italian film titled, “Sweden: Heaven and Hell” – it was later covered by Giorgio Moroder in 1968 and then recognized from a popular skit from The Muppets.

I have taken the television comedy series release of “The Best of Benny Hill” and combined the two, since the show occasionally used the musical piece in various skits. It defines the silly and crazy antics of this very-funny man!

REISSUE: "Somewhere" by Vicki Shepard - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Vicki Shepard created a high energy classic in 1989 with a disco cover of Stephen Sondheim's "Somewhere" -- this track manages to resurface in clubs even today. The original release marked a return to high energy basics with a mix by Steven Von Blau. Vocals by Vicki also helped to keep this track alive since it's release - she is a very talented lady. Taking many of the beautiful visions from the 1998 Polygram film, "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra I have piece together these wonderful masterpieces.

Hoping to create an outline for the "gift of life" - this Video Mix is dedicated to the energy that keeps our lives happy and knowing that in our minds we are all where we need to be.

“One Shot Lover” by Venus – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Venus is a high energy disco group from Alvers, Belgium – the band consisted of Ellen, Leen, Sinthia, Chantal and Christel. A group began recording in 1980 and continued through 2000. They are best known for their 1984 high energy disco hit, “One Shot Lover” – produced by Frank Sauter who also produced Dance Reaction, Lady Butterfly and Boomgang.

“One Shot Lover” is treated to a Disco Video Mix along with the 1962 British spy film “Dr. No” – which is the first of the James Bond film series. It stars Sean Connery and Ursula Andress. The action adventure tale of Dr. Julius No, who plots to disrupt a manned space launch with his evil radio beam weapon.

The action flows with the synth tracks and sexy images along the James Bond tradition.

REISSUE: "It's A War" by Kano - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1980 dance floor hit, "It's A War" by Kano was a powerhouse track that featured some incredible outlines for a classic dance track. Produced by Italian producers L. Ninzatti, M. Bosanto and S. Pulga.

I have taken the 1970 adventure film, "Voyage Into Space" from Japan - featuring "Giant Robot" and young spy, Johnny Sakko -- the film is a fantasy epic where a young boy becomes a spy to fight against the evil forces that threaten the planet earth. A few monsters are conjured up to add to the excitement.

With a bit of editing and reworking the footage I have made "It's A War" one for the big guys!

REISSUE: "A Place Called Tarot" by Tantra - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

One of the most intriguing of both film and music are combined here.

Tantra created a wall of imaginary visions with their dance floor classic's "Hills Of Kat Mandu" and "Wishbone" in 1979 -- in 1982 they returned with "The Journey Continues" EP featuring "Macumba" and "A Place Called Tarot". Now an underground classic for many disc jockeys, the sound of this track rings on in this video.

The sequel to "The Exorcist" was released in 1977 -- "Exorcist II: The Heretic" was not well received by moviegoers. It even provoked director; John Boorman to pull the original print and re-create an alternative ending, which he felt, would save the film. Needless to say, the plot was too hard to follow for most audiences. They wanted to see Linda Blair's head spin again.

I believe the film and the story were far ahead of this parallel -- it is actually an effective display of what good and evil portray in the minds of some. I have taken the mystical places from the imagination of our lead characters and placed Tantra's theme, "A Place Called Tarot" over it. It is given to take you on a ride that may not follow the film's outline, but is entrancing just as the song is.

GIORGIO MORODER CD RELEASE: Giorgio Moroder - On The Groove Train – Volume 2: 1974-1985

http://www.repertoirerecords.com/?p=6531

Giorgio Moroder - On The Groove Train – Volume 2: 1974-1985

A second volume of rarities from the international back catalogue releases of legendary disco producer Giorgio Moroder – ranging from the late great Donna Summer, whose career he launched, to many of his lesser-known protégés.

Moroder’s Musicland Studios produced the most influential disco music outside America in the 1970s and 1980s, and this collection dating from 1974-85 takes in the genre’s heyday.

Acts featured include studio house band Munich Machine, bearded, sometime Miami Vice actor Richard T Bear, American chanteuse Roberta Kelly and Moroder himself duetting (as Giorgio and Chris) with female singer and pianist Chris Bennett. Americans Janis Ian and Melissa Manchester also collaborated with Moroder, the former with the 1979 hit single ‘Fly Too High’, the single edit of which is included here.

In-depth liner note by Michael Heatley details the many different vocal and instrumental permutations Moroder used to create his music.

Expertly remastered – superb sound – top quality reproduction. The best in the business!

REISSUE: “Big Spender” by The Ritchie Family – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The film "Sweet Charity" was my favorite film at the age of 13. So don't be surprised that when The Ritchie Family released "American Generation" in 1978 featuring a disco version of "Big Spender" I was ecstatic!

It crossed my mind to use snippets of the film with Shirley McClaine, Chita Rivera and Paula Kelly and sync their fabulous dance numbers (choreographed by Bob Fosse. Well here it is! No sweat. Just lots of excitement.

Hold on. This is the disco version - although it may not appear to be out of place.

The 1949 Samuel Goldwyn Classic, "Our Very Own" with Ann Blyth and Farley Granger is blended with disco classic, "Tender Is The Night" by THP Orchestra to create a romantic interlude in this video mix.

The track from the 1978 LP by the same name is given life by producers Ian Guenther & Willi Morrison -- a beautiful dance ballad with The Duncan Sisters (Phyllis and Helen Duncan) weaving magic with their alluring vocals. I have always held both this song and the film close to my heart. This being the perfect time to bring the two together -- and dedicate to my partner, Ken.

REISSUE: "Strike It Up" by Black Box - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Italo-house hit the dance floors in 1989 with Black Box. Their first release "Ride On Time" was executed by taking vocal samples from Loleatta Holloway's 1979 disco hit "Love Sensation" and creating a whole new track with a momentum that opened doors for house music.

The LP "Dreamland" was released in 1990 with the single "Strike It Up" heading the package again onto the dance floor. With vocals by Martha Wash (Two Tons 'O Fun, Weather Girls) this session was over any expectations the dance industry had felt in a while.

An idea introduced to me by Ken Emmons was to take the 1962 musical "The Music Man" starring Robert Preston and Shirley Jones and create a Disco Video Mix is displayed here.

Carrie remake delayed until October 2013, plus a low res peek at the new poster

Carrie remake delayed until October 2013, plus a low res peek at the new poster

Let's play the movie shuffle game! Well, I wish I could say this was a huge surprise, but it actually makes a lot of sense. Originally slated to open in March, the CARRIE remake is now being bumped to October, which steers it clear of another remake that's still on course to open dangerously close, that being the EVIL DEAD remake. Both of them opening weeks apart always struck me as a gamble, so perhaps this was a game of scheduling chicken and CARRIE lost.
The remake is directed by Kimberly Peirce (STOP LOSS, BOYS DON'T CRY) and stars Chloe Moretz as the titular character, originally played by Sissy Spacek, and co-stars Julianne Moore as Carrie's crazy mother. The first adaptation was directed by Brian DePalma, and propelled a young John Travolta forward into his career, while leaving images of a blood soaked Spacek embedded in our minds for decades to come.
Also today, a new low-res poster snuck online for the film, showing a blood-soaked CARRIE dripping all over the page. (UPDATE: We're getting reports that it's a fanmade fake...but, a pretty good one if it is.) Naturally, we'll update as soon as we have a higher resolution version, but you can take a gander nonetheless below.

REISSUE: "Love Spy" by Mike Mareen - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

High energy returned in the early 80's faithfully with artists like Mike Mareen - the electronic keyboards hovering over massive synthetic bass lines. Actually Mike had been around on the German disco music scene since 1974 this being his crossover to mega-disco.

"Love Spy" sounds similar to the Bobby Orlando formula with a bit more resources working along side Mike Mareen's crazy and outrageous themes. This one was a great return for him in 1986 and actually received dance radio play in the US. It is an adventure into electronic disco with more imagination and simplistic play. His earlier tracks included "Dancing In The Dark" and "Agent Of Liberty".

I have taken the 1997 film "Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery" starring Mike Myers, Elizabeth Hurley and Michael York into the Disco Video Mix and let the adventure takes it own coarse. It is a fun and silly trip - enjoy it while you can.

REISSUE: “Just Blue” by Space - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1976 science fiction film, “Logan’s Run” has been a favorite among many with its credulous theme. It is the 23rd century and living in this time is like living a dream – fulfilling all of your every fantasy – but you only live until you are 30 years of age. At that time you are literally “burnt out.”

The visuals from “Logan’s Run” were quite advanced for 1976 – many will find them an elementary as some monsters movies of the 60’s compared to today. But the surrealistic technology advancement works well with the tame visuals. Directed by Michael Anderson.

Space’s “Just Blue” has been placed over these images to create the same effect that the LP did for many forerunners of new age and disco themed music. Produced by Jean-Philippe Iliesco and composed and arranged by Didier Marouani – this follow up LP to their “Deliverance” project left dancers in a futuristic arena of sound and imaginary themes. Since they were one of the first to examine this musical trip their keyboards and arrangements are hailed as some of the greatest in disco.

“Break Me” by Charade featuring Norman Lewis – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

A salute to 80s high energy and horror!

Charade is a disco group from UK producer John Davies – who also gave us the high-energy hit, “Got To Get To You” from 1983 and also Norma Lewis’ “Give Me Back My Heart” from 1983. Norma is also featured as vocalist again on “Break Me. This is the peak of high energy during the mid-80s and the full sound of Passion Records.

I have taken the horror flick “Bride Of Chucky” from 1998 starring Jennifer Tilly and blended the gothic-like feel of the disco track with the maniacal horror-dark comedy. It plays out with the feel of the song and the images that Chucky has always brought to our homes!

"Let's Go Round Again" by Average White Band - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Average White Band was a rhythm and blues/soul group from Scotland whom shared success in 1974 with a single titled, “Pick Up The Pieces”. The track created a path for AWB to last throughout the late 80’s.

“Let’s Go Round Again” was a track released in 1980 and produced by David Foster who helped to deliver a pop-dance track that became an underground dance hall hit later in the mid-80’s. The track delivers a great vocal, wonderful string arrangements and a power message.

Taking the 1980 film titled, “Somewhere In Time” with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour – a time travel romance story written by Richard Matheson. Scenes from the fantasy-like film accent “Let’s Go Round Again” with sensitivity and purpose. I was happy to bring the two together.

“Sweet Dynamite” by Claudja Barry – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Claudja Barry is one of disco music’s main diva forces. She was active during the days of the upcoming dance boom. Much of her music is now classics among the still vibrant club scene.

“Sweet Dynamite” is from her 1976 album by the same name – produced by her husband, Jurgen S. Korduletsch. A big old-school disco classic. I have taken the 1973 Blaxploitation flick, “Cleopatra Jones” starring Tamara Dobson. The action and high-energy scenes from the film play well with the strings and funky-ass bass of Ms. Barry’s explosive track!

The film was directed by Jack Starrett

REISSUE: "Instant Love" by Sylvia Love - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Sylvia Love released her disco track, "Instant Love" in 1979 - produced by Trevor Vallis. Formulated in the D.D. Jackson "Automatic Lover" vein and using similar sequencers to Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" the track became more of an underground sensation.

In the early 80's many of after-hours dance clubs with jocks assembling music that was fitting for dancing before the sun came up were placing this one on rotation. As the years have passed and much of the electronic influence in dance music has and continues to progress it is always interesting to look back at the pioneers who steered us in this direction.

"Queen Of Outer Space" is one of the campiest science fiction takes in 1958 - starring Zsa Zsa Gabor and Eric Fleming leading the adventure. The story line is simple - the planet "Venus" (the planet of love) has kept men away until this a spaceship of 3 eligible bachelors convinces then that a waste of beauty is no good.

This video mix salutes the "Cult Camp Classic" films and also the same sound in disco music, which follows along the outlines.
