"Willie and The Hand Jive" by Rinder and Lewis - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Rinder and Lewis released a project titled “Warriors” in 1979 – their work has always been instrumental in formulating disco music during the mid and late 70's. Discognosis, El Coco, In Search Of Orchestra, Le Pamplemousse, Saint Tropez, and Tuxedo Junction were some of their outstanding contributions to the dance era.

“Warriors” was a disco venture, which outlined a few hits from the 60’s dance floor – luckily they took on a cover of Johnny Otis’ “Willie and The Hand Jive” – but on disco terms. The percolating synthesizers and percussion work this track as if it were created for the disco beats and along a persuasive vocal.

This has always been one track that I honored as deep-rooted disco.

Taking the 1988 John Waters’s comedy “Hairspray” and applying it to this track hit me and is now a new take on 60’s meets 70’s. Ricki Lake, Divine, Jerry Stiller, Deborah Harry, Ruth Brown and Sonny Bono are among the talent that has kept this film alive even today. Waters created a true classic with this project.

“Romeo & Juliet” by Alec R. Costandinos - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Alec R. Costandinos has placed his name high above the wall of disco greats – and with projects like “Romeo & Juliet” from 1977 it is no wonder. Recorded in London using some of the most talented and remarkable musicians and technical engineers from the disco era.

This creation disco-fied William Shakespeare’s tale of love and tragedy and made it a common know masterpiece among disco audiophiles. It is truly a wonderful piece of music that transcends dance floors.

Taking Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo & Juliet” featuring Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting and match the drama is the only way I could pay homage to Costandinos for his genius. It is truly an experience that brought tears to my eyes.

“Double Trouble” by Diva - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Joe La Greca along with Denis LaPage created Diva’s “Double Trouble” – a big hit for the Canadian disco movement in the early 80’s. Studio bands like Lime helped to bridge the sound of disco music in transition from Euro-disco to an electronic fusion.

“Double Trouble” is complete assembling of the La Greca and Le Page disco sound, which dominated dance floors throughout the 80’s.

I have taken Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers On A Train” from 1951 starring Farley Granger and Robert Walker to complete the statement from the disco track. Walker takes control of Farley’s life by murdering a nuisance wife who begins a tale of suspense and action. Anyone who has seen the film will understand what is intended here.

Myself being an extreme Hitchcock fan could not wait to use this masterpiece in a Video Mix.

“The Fight (For The Single Family)” by Norma Lewis – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Norma Lewis played a major part in bringing disco torch songs back onto dance floors in the early 80’s. She was actually Marsha Raven (“Catch Me”, “I Like Plastic”, etc.) and Charade (“Got To Get To You”) before she began recording under Norma Lewis.

And under Norma Lewis she was a phenomenal asset to dance music – with cuts such as “Break Me”, “Maybe This Time”, “Life Is The Reason”, “For All We Know”, “Tonight (Dancing With The Desperate)”, and “Surprise Me Tonight” as well as a current recording of a cover version of “Someone That I Used To Love”. This line up is a hard one to forget when you adore beautiful dance music.

“The Fight (For The Single Family)” was another tribute to the workingwoman – very similar to Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard For The Money”. It was released in 1982 and produced by Phil Harding.

I have taken one of my favorite comedies of all-time, “Private Benjamin” and literally placed “The Fight” over a “private in the war” – well her own war. This was a great time for me to use some wonderful footage of Goldie Hawn being the adorable and lovable character that we all loved in 1980 – the film was directed by Howard Zieff.

“In Hollywood (Everybody Is A Star)” by Village People – Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1977 Village People hit, “In Hollywood (Everyone Is A Star)” from their first LP titled, “Village People” gets the Video Mix treatment here. A darker side of Hollywood all together with the use of excerpts from John Schlesinger’s 1975 film, “Day Of The Locust” staring Karen Black, Donald Sutherland and William Atherton.

The film gives a dramatic depiction of the lure of Hollywood in the 1930’s but also the dark and dreary side of how the dream of stardom left many empty minded and handed. The films climatic ending where a symbolic deterioration of society and its need for violence for change.

On the lighter side of this arena, the Village People track has always been a festive opportunity for dance and celebration. The meeting of these 2 elements is only for entertainment purposes and my lure for the left-field style of filmmaking.

NOTE: The drag sequence used in this Video Mix features none other than Paul Jabara – in another rare movie appearance.

"Love Your Body" by Amanda Lear - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Amanda Lear became a mystery for most people on dance floors following her late 70’s club hits, “Blood and Honey” and “Follow Me” – it was soon after when she became a fixture with “Love Your Body”

1983 was the release of this club favorite produced by Peter Ludemann and in the genre of the aerobic craze of the early 80’s. Although the song maintained an energy of it’s own with it’s pulsating synthesizers and line up calls for action. And it was Amanda’s alluring vocals which completed this picture.

A couple of years later, “Perfect” starring Jamie Lee Curtis and John Travolta outlined the exercise craze by taking the theme into a modest controversial arena. Although the story line was not the most memorable the scenes with Curtis leading aerobic troups was not soon forgotten. I have taken pieces of the film and created a mild- erotic mind warp into the exercise world.

The film was directed by James Bridges.
