REISSUE: “Bedrock” by Georgio – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Georgio is a musician, arranger and producer with music that explored a pop/funk and house formula – using heavy bass synthesizers to create dance tracks for the ever-changing dance floor of the late 80s. His 1987 single “Bedrock” is one of the most contagious of his repertoire and although the theme is a bit more intimate I have extended the fantasy a bit further for this Disco Video Mix.

“The Flintstones” is a live-action feature based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon – it stars John Goodman, Rick Moranis and Rosie O’Donnell – it is the fun and crazy action in this Disco Video Mix.

The film was directed by Brian Levant

REISSUE: “Double Trouble” by Diva - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Joe La Greca along with Denis LaPage created Diva’s “Double Trouble” – a big hit for the Canadian disco movement in the early 80’s. Studio bands like Lime helped to bridge the sound of disco music in transition from Euro-disco to an electronic fusion.

“Double Trouble” is complete assembling of the La Greca and Le Page disco sound, which dominated dance floors throughout the 80’s.

I have taken Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers On A Train” from 1951 starring Farley Granger and Robert Walker to complete the statement from the disco track. Walker takes control of Farley’s life by murdering a nuisance wife who begins a tale of suspense and action. Anyone who has seen the film will understand what is intended here.

Myself being an extreme Hitchcock fan could not wait to use this masterpiece in a Video Mix.

REISSUE: “(Carmen) Danger In Her Eyes” by Deborah Sasson & MCL – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Deborah Sasson along with MCL (Micro Chip League) producers Alexander Henninger and Ken Taylor recreate the tragedy of the 1845 novella Carmen and then 1875 opera. The 1989 techno track has the emphasis of a sledgehammer pounding out the drama until the last breath of our heroine’s saga.

I have taken the 1954 musical adaption by Otto Preminger, “Carmen Jones” which translates the film set during World War II and gives the vixen played by Dorothy Dandridge a take on the opera. The film also stars Harry Belafonte and Pearl Bailey.

Twin Sisters, Still Proud Prostitutes at 69

By NILS KONGSHAUG
May 24, 2012

Being old is not an advantage in the oldest profession. So it's no surprise that a filmmaker would spot a good story in 69-year-old twin sisters Louise and Martine Fokkens. Between them, they have more than 80 years' experience working as prostitutes in Amsterdam's infamous Red Light District.

"I can't tell you how many tricks we've had," says Louise. "Countless."

Louise retired two years ago, at age 67. With her arthritis, she says, "I couldn't get one leg over the other."

But Martine is still working the window, soliciting passing men, young and old, in her dominatrix outfit.

"She needs the money," says Louise. "You can't live off a state pension."

The film, in Dutch with English subtitles, is called (of course) "Meet the Fokkens." It opens for a two-week run at New York City's Film Forum on August 8. Distributors plan to release it in other major cities around the U.S. after that.

"This is the story we wanted to tell," directors Gabriëlle Provaas and Rob Schröde said in a statement. "Louise and Martine are real old-fashioned Amsterdam hookers: liberated, cheerful and not scared of anybody."

"You've been a whore," Louise tells her sister in the film. "You'll never get rid of that name. So be one."

Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands. Sex workers have health benefits, work permits, even a union. But even in Amsterdam, it is not an easy life.

And in recent years, some Dutch officials say the industry has gotten out of control. Violence and human trafficking are on the rise. The mayor of Amsterdam has expressed concern that small-scale entrepreneurs are being pushed out by big crime organizations.

Prostitution was legalized in the Netherlands in order to protect sex workers. But recent reports have found that some sex workers, especially those brought in from other countries, have been forced into the business and are being abused by their pimps.

"Everything has changed," Louise says. "In the old days, the local cop would tap on the window if a girl was showing too much ankle. Now the girls deal coke from their cubicles."

Even in the oldest profession, apparently, there were good old days.

REISSUE: “What Have I Got To Lose” by Astaire – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Astaire is a high energy studio band from the UK featuring the beautiful vocals of Miss Tracy Ackerman – the 1986 single “What Have I Got To Lose” is anthem of love and strength and has always been one of the pieces of a set during the time. It was produced by Nigel Stock for Passion Records.

I have taken the single and blended it with the 1974 film, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” starring Ellen Burstyn, Kris Kristofferson and good old Mel’s Diner (continued in the television spin-off “Alice”). The film is the story of a widowed woman determined to make it in a discouraging world. Somehow the two crossed paths in my mind and they became this Disco Video Mix.

Marseilles released a dance cover version of the great Charles Aznavour song “Comme Ils Disent" (“What Makes A Man”) - produced and arranged by Steve Jolley & Steve Warwick. This version was released in 1990 and did quite well in the underground gay club circuit.

I have taken the 1994 film, “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” starring Terrance Stamp, Hugo Weaving and
Guy Pearce and placed images and scenes of the comedy-drama along side of this Disco Video Mix to create a whole need message.

REISSUE: "Workin' and Slavin' (I Need Love)" by Midnight Rhythm - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Joe Long and Robby Adcock assembled a studio session in 1978 full of funky disco band elements and orchestrations that fit the period like a tuff pair of disco skates.

"Workin' and Slavin' (I Need Love)" was a single from the LP that solidified the excitement and growth of disco music. It was uplifting, hardcore and definitely taking dance floors by surprise. The pounding riffs and uplifting bridge were everything that disco aspired to be.

I have taken the 1976 comedy film "Car Wash" and tagged the disco track to a whole new meaning - it stars Darrow Igus, Otis Day, James Spinks, The Pointer Sisters, and Richard Pryor. The daily routine of hard work and the need for a little downtime for love are used in bits and pieces.

REISSUE: "Quartz" by Quartz – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Quartz is Dider Plus, Laurent Taieb and Patrick Langlade – a French band and self-titled from 1978 remains one of the innovative new-age disco sounds to date. The project utilizes synthesizers and bass moogs in variation of disco themes which invoke mystery. “”Beyond The Clouds” is a classic among disco connoisseurs and even today has a unique rhythm quality and arrangement.

I have taken the title track “Quartz” – which sounds like it could be past or futuristic and paired it with the 1984 adventure film, “Conan The Destroyer” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Grace Jones and Olivia d’Abo. The warrior fends his way through obstacles to rescue the Princess Jehnna and our disco chants help lead the way.

REISSUE: "Buenos Aires" by Festival - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The big disco version of the Broadway recording and musical of "Evita" by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice - properly executed in his own Euro-disco style by Boris Midney (USA European Connection, Beautiful Bend, Caress, Masquerade, Companion, Double Discovery).

Midney applied his jazz and classical touch to disco music to many of his projects and also infusing a touch of keyboard and effects technology creating a whole new emphasis on hearing and dancing to disco music.

His studio production of Festival is a new and exciting way of hearing the fantastic soundtrack to "Evita" - a whole new concept with his flair and growth in disco music.

I have taken the 1996 film footage of "Evita" starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas to complete this new form of music and images. It outlines the pieces of film that outline the excitement and drama in the story.

REISSUE: "Fear" by Easy Going - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Fear" was an Italian production with an innovative feel for dance floors during its release. The robotic feel along with the vocoder generated lead vocals create an electro feel and hypnotic transition. I have taken the LP version and a 1973 horror film, "Torso" -- directed by Sergio Martino and created a new meaning to the song. The film "Torso" was a Carlo Ponti production and was added to the slasher film list of the 70's. More eroticism was added to utilize the cast including Suzy Kendall ("To Sir, With Love") and many other Italian beauties (men and women) in this psychosexual thriller. It also contains one of the most squeamish moments of suspense at the end of the film which I used a climax for the video.

REISSUE: "Chinatown" by Cruisin' Gang - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Italo disco ensemble, Cruisin' Gang are Laura Fadinger, Ombretta Marsigli and Sabrina Morroya - produced by Ennio Manuel, Vallicelli and Trevisani. There was a new vision to dance music in Italy during the early 80's and many producers, musicians and artists were taking their concepts and making them a part of the dance movement.

"Chinatown" is a release from an LP by the same name that captures the essence of Cruisin' Gang - a mystical ambient-like disco track with fantastical and sensual vocals. The use of synthesizers and keyboards follows a mild energy but delivers on the atmospheric flow.

I have taken one of my favorite "film-noir" masterpieces, "Chinatown" to fill the visual end focusing on Faye Dunaway and Jack Nicholson - capturing the chemistry and some drama along with the song's drawn out suspense aura.

The film was released in 1974 - and was directed by Roman Polanski

REISSUE: "Future World" by Ganymed - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The 1973 science fiction film, "Soylent Green" is paired with the 1979 German disco band hit, "Future World" -- a whole new look on the Stanley Greenberg screenplay based on the Harry Harrison novel. The planet is in the "over population" stage and the environment has been effect by the greenhouse effect making the temperature reach unbearable highs.

The film starred Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young, Brock Peters, Joseph Cotton, Chuck Connors, Paula Kelly and was the last film for Edward G. Robinson.

Although Ganymed's tune outlines an "Automatic Lover" style lyric, I have paired it with some of "Soylent Green's" grayish and disturbing scenes to give it a new contrast.

The song was a minor hit here in the US as it appeared at the end of the disco wave -- but I understand the band was still a bit hit in Germany and surrounding areas. Their sound was recognizable and in the early 80's a must for after-hours dancing or drinking. Great synthetic feel.

Touré On Donna Summer: Anti-Disco Movement Pushed People To 'Get Back In The Closet'

REISSUE: "Bring Me Edelweiss" by Edelweiss - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Edelweiss is Walter Werzowa, Martin Gletschermayer and Martin Forster – in 1988 their single “Bring Me Edelweiss” brought to mind another retro period with their cleaver sampling of ABBA’s “S.O.S.”.

The track did pretty good in house segments of club play and then disappeared pretty fast. It was producer and composed by M.M. Gletschermayer and Walter Werzowa with of course, melody samples from ABBA.

My Disco Video Mix was to bring to mind the power of ABBA and also a concept by my partner, Ken.

Lucy Meets Simone ("It's Too Late")

Just a little fun I had with one of my favorite episodes of "I Love Lucy" and a nice 80s cover of Carol King's "It's Too Late" by Simone. That darn boat! :)

Donna Summer Dead at 63 :(

Donna Summer -- the Queen of Disco -- died this morning after a battle with cancer ... TMZ has learned.

We're told Summer was in Florida at the time of her death. She was 63 years old.

Sources close to Summer tell us ... the singer was trying to keep the extent of her illness under wraps. We spoke to someone who was with Summer a couple of weeks ago ... who says she didn't seem too bad.

In fact, we're told she was focused on trying to finish up an album she had been working on.

Summer was a 5-time Grammy winner who shot to superstardom in the '70s with iconic hits like "Last Dance," "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls."

She continued her dominance in the '80s with "She Works Hard for the Money" and "This Time I Know It's for Real."

Summer and her producer Giorgio Moroder defined the dance music era of the '70s and influenced acts like Duran Duran and David Bowie to enter the genre.

Summer married Brooklyn Dreams singer Bruce Sudano back in 1980. They had two daughters together.

“Space Trouble” by Why Not – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Why Not is Italian producer Gianni Salvatori (Matia Bazar, RAF, Italian Boys, Ross, The Nasty Boys) along with arranger Ricardo Eterno – their 1987 project “Space Trouble” is an electronic dance track which is similar to Italian acts like Koto and Laserdance. It is a fusion of synthetic percussion and wild-and-50’s sci-fi edged keyboards.

I have paired this Italo-disco track to the 1979 sci-fi horror flick “Alien” starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt and Veronica Cartwright. The story centers on a mining ship investigating a suspected SOS on a distant planet and ends up discovering a strange alien “terror”.

The film moves well with the disco syncopated groove and the wacky-voice overs – it is a new way of seeing this flick where “in space no one can hear you scream!”

REISSUE: “Sinner Man” by Sarah Dash – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Sarah Dash is one of the vocalists during the early 70s who worked with Labelle – a movement of soul, rhythm and blues and funk. This new fusion also bridged a connection to popular rock music of the time. Sarah’s solo recording career began in 1971 with her project “Close Enough” where her soulful and unique sound promised a new growth for the artist.

During the disco explosion in 1978 Sarah released the single, “Sinner Man” from her self-titled LP. The song was an instant club and radio hit creating a soulful vocal and glorious disco arrangement together for a new edge and classic disco recording.

I have taken the 1987 comedy-fantasy film, “The Witches of Eastwick” starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer for the images in this Disco Video Mix. The story-line remains the same and is only extenuated by “Sinner Man’s” defiant and cautious lyrics.
