T.O.P. 25 Chart - October 1983

T.O.P. 25 is a San Francisco chart which featured not only their chart compiled from local disc jockeys, but record sales from local shops and radio play.

There were many benefits from their charts that most originated from another great record store in San Francisco, Ron's Records - they featured many different dance music flavors.

I will be posting each month in the future from 1982 - 1986.

Columbia House 1979 - Such a Deal!

You have heard, “Penny for your thoughts” – but if you did not experience the 70’s you would not know the term, “Penny for your music.”

This is an ad you would see in front of TV Guides, gossip magazines, well, practically everywhere. But you could tape a penny to the order form and get 13 or more 8-tracks, cassettes or albums. What a deal. Oh, but them you had to receive the latest top pick album, which most of the time was not in your genre.

It is great fun to see these ads – more to come!

Mail O Disc Records - Catalogues 1980 - 1986

LAST UPDATE: 9/17/07

Long before Dean Ferguson’s wonderful vinyl and now CD service, Imports Express there was Mail O Disc.

One of my greatest addictions!

The bi-weekly catalogue would consist of 5 to 6 pages of Import and Domestic disco/dance music and was a very good source for keeping your collection up to date. At the time these were the upcoming classics and a wonderful and fast way to obtain them. These charts can now be used as a point of reference to keep a collection up to date or play catch up.

I am scanning the pages “Import 12” Singles,” “Import LPs” and some “US Albums.” These are excellent because Mail O Disc carried everything!

I will be posting many periods from 1980 - 1986 piece by piece - please check back.

I am posting the main ad and as tempting as it may be, please do not call. For Mail O Disc was long gone following 1986.

Enjoy!

Probe - September 1985

Probe was one of Los Angeles' most exciting gay dance clubs - open from 11 PM to ??? That meant sometimes 10 AM the next day. The music and the atmosphere were always on top of the list.

This was the club which was featured in the film, "American Gigolo" - Richard Gere walks down the long flight of steps into the club during one scene and Cheryl Barnes' "Love and Passion" is pounding out of the speakers! Hot!

Late in 1985 a co-DJ, John Riles fastened several guest disc jockey appearances for this and the Probe had one of the most incredible sound systems I have ever worked on. And along with the hardcore dancers it was like spinning in another world. I thank Stuart for giving me the opportunity - since Los Angeles was about status mostly and he was very kind to give me the chance.

I will be loading more of the club info and flyers soon.

Spinner - August 15, 1992

Spinner was a excellent bi-weekly international dance music chart - this issue feature the breakdowns on their many charts (including Dean Ferguson of Imports Express-still pumping out great disco/dance music). Also, an article by disco producer, Vince Degiorgio (Tapps, Persusion, etc.).

Spinner was based in Boulder, Colorado and assisted many in the early 90's to stay on top of great dance music. - Thank you Spinner!

So California Disco DJ Association

This was a monthly chart of the latest and great disco music and also many ads and information regarding the music industry during the time.

Here are a few pages of a late issue in 1979.

S.A.N.D.A. - April 1981

S.A.N.D.A. was a alternative record pool that began in November 1980 and last until August 1981.

Their charts featured not only disco/dance but nu-wave, punk, soul and many other alternative dance cuts. It was a great source to compare which records were climbing under these categories.

Here is one of their charts - many others contained some strange entries.

"Space Invaders" by Playback - The Video

Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Space Invaders” by Playback was released in 1979 on Ariola Records originally then remixed and released on WEA Records in Germany listed as Player(1) as the band. I have credited this video project to Playback as listed on the original 12”.

In 1977 a film titled “Starship Invasions” was released as an addition to the post-Star Wars craze. This film was a Canadian production, which used many cheap special effects as well as a thin plot. But the idealism behind the film and the acting was top form for B-films. I have taken excerpts of the film to create the music video for “Space Invaders”.

Homage

When he left in 1993 it made me realize the loss that San Diego's music scene had and also what a great friend I was losing.

This is an article that a local writer, Nigel Mayer (who also worked at Brass Rail with Rick and I) dedicated this article to Rick - I know that Rick is still here or at least the energy he created is."

To those who have left us but leave a wonderful energy of love and respect. I always believe that talented individuals who touch others leave so much energy behind. It is up to us to keep their magic alive.

Donna Summer - Gallery Show 1990

Gallery show announcment for Donna Summer's Gallery Tour from 1990 - I attended her San Diego show in Old Town at Circle Gallery and was in awe of Donna as a wonderful and kind person, as well as her talent for painting.

I also had the pleasure of meeting her husband, Bruce Sudano - he was a gentleman and very kind. At the time his label Purple Heart Records was taking off and he spoke alot about his projects. Another wonderful person.

'Thank God It's Friday' Press Kit

I was very fortunate that at the age of 15 that my parents owned a movie theatre and I became the projectionist, since I had an interest in films and movies.

When “Thank God It’s Friday” was released in 1978 we had a run of the movie at our theatre and this press kit was a part of the promotion of the disco film.

This movie played a big part in the success of disco music of the time. “Saturday Night Fever” was the forerunner, but besides the music by Bee Gees, Yvonne Elliman, The Trammps, etc. was not a “pro-disco” movie. It depicted disco music and discotheques more in a negative sense. I believe that “Thank God It’s Friday” was more of a light and fun experience in disco in the cinematic genre.

Here are a few pages from the theatrical press kit, which gives the studio (Columbia Pictures) ideas of promoting a disco film of the time. It was quite an event for disco to have such a soundtrack that of course yielded an Academy Award for Donna Summer and Paul Jabara for the now classic, “Last Dance”. There were many other disco powerhouse producers and artists involved in the soundtrack – including Bobby “DJ” Guttadaro who assisted in the soundtracks formation.

This press kit may be missing a few pieces on the pages, which were utilized for our theatre but I thought it was an interesting piece of “disco history”.

My parents allowed our theatre to add additional speakers to the lobby and in the theatre to blast the disco soundtrack and other disco music of the time to get mover goers into the mood during intermission – but at the time, not much was needed. The film was enough.

Danceworks Records - April 1994

Moving on to the 90's and a subcription service of the time called Danceworks Records - based in Chicago, Illinois. They provided a monthly chart of new and climbing disco/dance tunes. The best part of this subscription service is that they encompassed all other services and remixes. Also much information on new artists and potential buzz records. The support for independant disco artists was fantastic also - because as we all know, Donna Summer once had a demo acetate and was waiting to become a classic peformer at one time.

The service did not last for more than a coupe of years but their service was appreciated very much.

Dreamland

Back in 1980 while visiting my brother in San Francisco he asked me to attend a party at Dreamland with him. I was excited because I had read a few things about this club in a few magazines – it was suppose to be a club/disco done right. Not only did I witness Madleen Kane at her best but found one of the most exciting dance floor experiences.

I was not surprised to find that not only my expectations were met but exceeded. The room was incredible. Very posh and styled towards the most elite but exciting disco experience with great detail.

The night I celebrated Howard Merrit was working the room – and that he did – I think I danced to the longest version of “Working The Midnight Shift” by Donna Summer I had ever heard. Complete with effects from several other electronic cuts.

I have posted these images, which are from the booklet, which was available at the door on the way out of the club. This was a great experience in clubland as many of you may have your own. Most of my memories of this club are too remarkable to put into words. I attended Dreamland many other nights during 1980 and always left in a drenched sweat and a smile.

Thanks to the individuals who put this club experience together - it seemed as though it was for the experience and not to make a quick buck - as many theme clubs sometimes do.

Greg Stone

Dice Records recording artist, Greg Stone released a cover of The Trammps "That's Where The Happy People Go" in 1987 - he performed at my club The Brass Rail in 1989 and also sang a cover of Sharon Redd's "Love Insurance". Unfortunetely, Greg left us in 2001, but like all disco artists who leave us we never forget them and pay homage to their talent and commitment to disco music.

Greg was a wonderful friend and I post his obit placed in Los Angeles Frontiers Magazine - June 2001 by his partner Albino in his memory.

Greg - Thank you for the belief in disco and placing your talents in our paths. I know you are still there with the love and energy you gave in your life here.

Southern Exposure

A huge event here in San Diego on July 3, 1982 at San Diego Sports Arena - featured a hot performance by The Ritchie Family - singing "Give Me A Break" and "Best Disco In Town" and their latest hit at the time, "I'll Do My Best". Also featured Angela Clemmons sining, "Give Me Just A Little More Time" and also a incredble tranvestite look-alike of Diana Ross singing "The Boss" - everyone thought it was really Diana - there was a lot of confusion of what was going on :)

Debbie Jacobs

Flyer announcing Ms. Jacobs to perform in San Diego, CA on November 11, 1979 at WCPC - which was the "best disco in town" of it's time - and later became Club Montage - it is still open and called Montage but it is up the street and in a new building.

I attended this show and Debbie was incredible - when she sang, "All The Way" it made me believe she was going to cross over - she was just fabulous. And "Undercover Lover" and "Don't You Want My Love" she torn the house down!

Paul Parker

Madleen Kane in Playboy 1979

PLEASE SEE NEW ENTRY WHICH FEATURES 3 MORE DISCO QUEENS - ADULT CONTENT!

The Wherehouse - November 16, 1978

The Wherehouse - October 26, 1978

Donna Summer's "Live & More" is on the Top 20 as well as Taste Of Honey creating many slots for marketable disco. Village People's "Cruisin" LP is being watched for. And yet, many of the ads reflect pop/rock music os it's time - but not too long where disco takes over...

The Wherehouse - October 2, 1978

A spot for 12" Disco is placed below 45 list and becomes an ever growing spot as disco record sales begin to increase. Note that the sales are reflecting pop/rock songs at this point which in a few weeks become disco songs - this is a point where the disco boom became more noticed in sales.

The Wherehouse - June 22, 1978

You will notice that hardcore disco LPs begin to appear as "Smash Hits" which indicate high piece sells - Tuxedo Junction, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Voyage, and the soundtrack to "Thank God It's Friday" - this was the start of disco music's boom and it's impact from mid 1978 throughout the end of 1979.
