"Cutie Pie" by Lime - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Lime released "Take The Love" in 1986 - it is the sixth LP for Lime from a 1981 through 1986. Denis and Denyse LaPage set a standard in 80's high energy and disco scene. Their simplified, yet effective keyboard arrangements created many nights of non-stop dancing.

"Cutie Pie" is a single from the LP which was a flip side to the 12" single "Did You See That Girl?" - it was a big hit in my club and has a very catchy vocal riff.]

I have taken the 1956 now-cult classic film, "The Bad Seed" with Nancy Kelly and Patty McCormick as used the sweet on the surface child as the realm for "Cutie Pie". It is a bit demented in it's turnover message - but I feel hilarious and strange.

The film was directed by Mervyn LeRoy

FILM SNIPS: “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad” (1973) - Shiva - Dances and Defends

If you were a child of the 70’s you knew the adventure films that featured the animation effects which are now digital animation. Some great fantasy was created in this film for me a kid with this scene from “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad” featuring the great god, Shiva.

The special effects were mastered by Ray Harryhausen

Irwin Allen’s 70’s disaster epic, “The Towering Inferno” with the all-star cast that towers above 138 stories - even on fire! A few scenes featuring William Holden and Susan Blakley - and Steve McQueen and Paul Newman.

Amazing that so many classic stars were assembled to watch a tower burn.

Aliens and English Bulldogs II!

Oh, course...this is probably closer to an alien as you can get!

FILM SNIPS: “Strangers On A Train" (1951) - "Jane! Stop This Crazy Thing!"

From the Alfred Hitchcock (just love him) - The Master of Suspense! the 1951 film "Strangers On A Train" - the suspenseful climax where Farley Granger (who by the way, was gay) confronts Robert Walker on the runaway merry-go-round!

Hold on!

Aliens and English Bulldogs!

FILM SNIPS: “THE BIRDS” (1963) - “Bibbity Bobbity”

One of the incredible scenes in the Alfred Hitchcock film, “The Birds” - Tippi Hedren in the schoolyard lighting up while feathers gather.

Still one of the most suspenseful films ever!

FILM SNIPS: “EXORCIST 2 - THE HERETIC” (1977) - LINDA BLAIR IS A HEALER!

From the sequel to one of the most terrifying films of all time - “Exorcist 2 - The Heretic”

A bizarre outline of defining good and evil (once again) in the make-believe world of gods and devils - apparently Linda Blair was chosen to be tormented by a demon named Pazuzu because she was given special powers to heal by god? Okay. Well this is like ying and yang…I guess.

This is quite a touching scene where Linda displays her powers by healing an autistic child. One of the more sensitive and less silly scenes from the film.

Former RNC Chair Ken Mehlman Confirms in Interview: I'm Gay - HE ALSO HELPED TO DEFEND YES ON PROP 8!

THIS MAN IS JUST PLAIN HORRIBLE!

Ken Mehlman Co-Chairing Major Fundraiser in Case Against Prop 8Just got off the phone with Chad Griffin, Board President of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the organization challenging Proposition 8 in federal court, regarding former RNC Chair Ken Mehlman and reports that he is about to come out of the closet.

Griffin tells me that Ken Mehlman is chairing a major fundraiser in late September that has already raised over $1 million for the organization battling Prop 8. The fundraiser is co-chaired by prominent Republican donors Paul Singer and Peter Thiel and will be held at Singer's home.

A large number of other Republicans are co-hosts of the fundraiser including Mary Cheney, Margaret Hoover, and Steve Schmidt. Dick Gephardt is also among the hosts.

Said Griffin to Towleroad:

"Mehlman has committeed his own resources and been an integral part of the team at the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Our goal is to get as many people who aren't on the side of gay marriage on our side, and once they are here, to welcome them."

Said AFER board member Dustin Lance Black:

"Ken represents an incredible coup for the American Foundation for Equal Rights. We believe that our mission of equal rights under the law is one that should resonate with every American. As a victorious former presidential campaign manager and head of the Republican Party, Ken has the proven experience and expertise to help us communicate with people across each of the 50 states."

Joan Crawford stars in this 1970 film about the finding of prehistoric man and then the attempt to tame him. The film is quite funny as it attempts to be serious - but for 1970 and Joan Crawford playing a scientist…how serious can you be?

The first scene is a man in his underwear (?) searching in an old cave for Trog - the second part is Joan setting that monkey straight… “mommie dearest” style!

Movie: “Piranha 3D” - GET BIT!

“Piranha” - GET BIT!

Went to see our first movie at a theatre in almost 4 years! It was “Piranha” - it was fun but very graphic! Lots of nudity and crazy fun!

The original was tame and very much silly next to this one. After seeing bodies being cut in half, pulled apart and chewed up we had to leave close to the ending - it was fun, but like a “Tilt-O-Whirl” ride - enough is enough. Boy, am I getting’ old!

I would recommend it if you love horror and gore - it was quite fun for the moment.

"Singin' In The Rain" by Sheila and B. Devotion - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Sheila and B. Devotion are a group formed in France in 1977. Sheila (Annie Chancel) is the front of this ensemble and brings her sweet vocals to many of their disco projects.

"Singin' in The Rain" is an album produced by Claude Carrere, which features a disco production of the Gene Kelly musical-film number - done funky and sweet. The track did quite well in discothèques and brought to mind once again that disco music was carefree and unlimited.

I have created a Disco Video Mix using the 1952 film. "Singin' In The Rain" starring Gene Kelly, Donald O' Connor and Debbie Reynolds. The scenes and images work right along with the disco version quite well and remind how fun and fabulous age of the big musical was!

The film was directed by Stanley Donen

"Over The Rainbow" by Abbe - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Abbe Lane recorded her disco LP "Rainbows" in 1980 - produced by Norman B. Ratner (of Butterfly Records) and spotlights the singer/actress of the 1950's. This project contained a big disco hit, "You Make It Hard To Love" as well as several of Abbe's take on a few familiar remakes.

"Over The Rainbow" is her disco arrangement on the Judy Garland classic from the film "The Wizard Of Oz". It is truly Las Vegas camp. I have taken the album version and blended the two with several images and scenes from the all-time classic film and this disco cut. It makes Dorothy seem a bit more hip and her three friends more like chaperones.

This Disco Video Mix is dedicated to all "Friends of Dorothy"!

"Adventure" by Eleanor - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Eleanor Academia is a talented Filipino artist who's 1987 LP "Jungle Wave" was quite the offering for both jazz and electronic dance crossover track, "Adventure". The disco single release of "Adventure" was remixed by Shep Pettibone and done so in a favorable manner. Much like a Tantra ("Hills Of Kat Mandu") journey with a trace of New York funk injected.

This is one my favorite 80's fusion dance numbers.

Eleanor also offered on this LP project a few great jazz ballads and tracks that transcends beyond the dance genre - although "Adventure" is done very well.

I have taken the 1986 film, "Clan Of The Cave Bear" starring Darryl Hannah and blended the two to create simply, an adventure.

The film was directed by Michael Chapman

CityFest in Hillcrest 2010

Ken and I visited Cityfest this year in our neighborhood. Most of our pictures are from quite early on (before noon) so not many people have not yet arrived and some are from late in the evening where the event closed with a fantastic video of Hillcrest by Gary Rader and Anthony Gioffre of Golden Lode Star. It was excellent!

Proposition 8 ruling is on many minds

More than 100,000 people packed Hillcrest on Sunday, taking advantage of mild temperatures to celebrate the San Diego neighborhood’s 26th annual CityFest.

The event was a showcase of diversity for many of those who attended the daylong festival, in an area known as the cultural center of the local gay community.

Gays and lesbians weren’t the only people celebrating Sunday.

“I think it’s incredible,” said Patrick Thompson as he helped his daughters Kaylin, 5, and Annabelle, 4, make hats out of paper bags at a craft booth.

Thompson and his wife and children arrived from their home in Oceanside to attend CityFest for the first time.

“We raised them to be open-minded,” Thompson said of his daughters. “They’re just rolling with all of the punches. They’re enjoying all of it.”

More than 285 vendors filled about nine blocks, selling everything from food and drinks to jewelry and clothes. A stage on University Avenue featured 11 musical acts. Many of the bars and restaurants were overflowing with customers.

Sunday’s event came just four days after another crowd gathered a few blocks away at the San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center to celebrate a federal judge’s decision to overturn Proposition 8, a voter-approved constitutional amendment that outlawed same-sex marriage in California.

Aside from a late-afternoon rally Sunday at the festival’s main stage, there were few outward signs of last week’s ruling. But it was on the minds of many attendees.

North Park artist Anne Wolf said a lesbian couple stopped by her custom jewelry booth on Fifth Avenue to ask about wedding rings that were on display.

“They said, ‘Maybe we can get all of these laws sorted out now,’ ” said Wolf, who recently resumed making the rings after suspending the work when voters narrowly approved Proposition 8 in November 2008.

Wolf said she and her partner passed up the opportunity to get married before the amendment became law because they didn’t think the measure would succeed.

She said they won’t make that mistake again if same-sex marriages are allowed to resume while the ruling is appealed.

Wolf said about half of the rings she makes are purchased by gay and lesbian couples who sometimes have special needs.

“I just did a pair for a couple who are closeted,” she said. “I had to make the rings somewhat different so they wouldn’t have to answer embarrassing questions.”

Nearby, Kris Nelson surveyed the crowd from the front of her shop, Bluestocking Books.

Sales of new and used books during the festival run about the same as they do on a typical Sunday, she said, but foot traffic is higher, especially among people who are visiting the store for the first time.

“Hopefully, we gain another customer when they need a Christmas gift or a birthday card,” Nelson said.

The Hillcrest Business Association, which puts on CityFest, increased booth space by a third this year, said Benjamin Nicholls, the group’s executive director.

With some smaller public events folding because of the troubled economy, many vendors have increased their participation in CityFest and the festivals that remain, he said.

This year’s Hillcrest event will bring about $150,000 to the Business Association, Nelson said. About $100,000 of that money will pay for the cost of putting on CityFest. About $30,000 will go to neighborhood improvements, such as street cleaning and maintenance of the neon Hillcrest sign, and neighborhood marketing campaigns.
