REISSUE: "Party Girl" by Pattie Brooks - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Pattie Brooks (Our Miss Brooks) became the #1entry on the disco charts in 1978 with he big one, "After Dark". This gave Ms. Brooks many opportunities to bring us her talents to the dance floor - including her 1979 LP "Party Girl" produced by Bunny Sigler.

I have placed the track above scenes from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard - based on a novella by Truman Capote.

“Hot Jungle Drums and Voodoo Rhythm” by D.C. LaRue – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

D.C. LaRue is a disco star – his music is an art form and in his own unique style. His first big disco hit, “Cathedrals” is now a classic and continues to lure new disco followers with his charming delivery. “Hot Jungle Drums and Voodoo Rhythm” comes from D.C.’s 1979 album, “Forces Of The Night” – which is produced, arranged and conducted by disco’s very talents, Bob Esty.

I have blended “Hot Jungle Drums and Voodoo Rhythm” in this Disco Video Mix with the 1957 sci-fi/horror flick, “Voodoo Woman” – a tale of a mad scientist using a native tribes voodoo to create an indestructible being to serve his orders. It is quite a camp piece and deserves to rock with this disco classic.

The film was directed by Edward L. Cahn

“Boys Will Be Boys” by Duncan Sisters – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Phyllis and Helen Duncan are Duncan Sisters – they are known for their work with Canadian disco producers, Willi Morrison and Ian Guenther – on projects Sticky Fingers, THP Orchestra (#2) and their 1979 self-titled album.

“Sadness In My Eye” was the first big hit from the project with the second single “Boys Will Be Boys” following. Another great disco production with the full disco-orchestration and arrangement which THP (Two Hats Productions) were known for.

I have taken “Boys Will Be Boys” and mixed the visuals from the 1998 Farrelly Brothers film, “There’s Something About Mary” starring Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller and Matt Dillon – playing with the competitive romance between the three suitors after Mary’s heart.

The film was directed by Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly

REISSUE: "I'm No Angel" by Madleen Kane - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Madleen Kane has given disco music the appeal and poise necessary to shape the elegant and sensual feel. Her 1978 LP "Rough Diamond" made dance floors convert easily to the Euro-disco sound and rhythm.

In 1985, her electronic dance project "Cover Girl" gave a new energy top Madleen's sensual style - produced by Ian Anthony Stephens and co-written by Paul Parker. "I'm No Angel" was the first single that blazed onto dance floors and gave the high-energy scene some new material.

I have placed the millennium release of "Charlie's Angels" starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu along the disco track. The take on the 70's action/adventure series add to the deep and haunting feel of Madleen's song.

The film is directed by McG

REISSUE: “New York” by Nuggets – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Nuggets are a studio ensemble produced by Angelo and Felix Piccarreda and arranged by Italian disco producer Celso Valli along with Munich-engineer Jürgen Koppers. The 1979 LP titled “N.Y.” was released during the disco boom of the period and was quite a celebratory event. Featuring the titled track “New York” and a cover of “Proud Mary” – a tribute to America and the sensation that the late 70s disco scene created.

I have taken the titled track “New York” along with the 1980 film “Can’t Stop The Music” starring Village People, Valerie Perrine and Bruce Jenner (in his first movie role) – an outline of the late Village People founder and producer Jacques Morali and his discovery of one of disco music’s fabulous acts.

The celebratory dance sequences and silly drama provide an uplifting backdrop for this Disco Video Mix.

“Look, they drummed you out of Hollywood. So you come crawling back to Broadway. Well, Broadway doesn’t go for booze and dope!”

REISSUE: “Don’t Stop The Music” by Fussy Cussy – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Fussy Cissy is Cussy Nicodemo – their first release in 1976 was a single titled “Disco Kings”. This began their dedication to creating dance music. It was a Canadian production in 1981 where Denis LePage stepped in to arrange a single titled “Don’t Stop The Music” – it was a heyday for LePage during his very successful band, Lime. The single had quite a resemblance to a Lime track and made the song even more irresistible to dance floors.

I have taken the 1984 Herbert Ross film “Footloose” starring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer and John Lithgow and pulled the two together to create some excitement. The dance sequences in the film provide a great energy and great fun to the track.

REISSUE: "Jealousy" by Amii Stewart - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Paradise Bird" is Amii Stewart's follow-up LP in 1978 - the following year her project "Knock On Wood" took discotheques by storm. Produced Barry Leng created a selection of dance tracks including "Jealousy".

Featuring a deep synth-bass loop and high-end chorus this track takes over your emotions.

It was Ken's concept ...to blend the drama of the 1992 comedy-fantasy film, "Death Becomes Her" starring Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis. The film has the elements of a love-hate relationship between the 2 heroines and soon it becomes a matter of life and death and death...

The film is directed by Robert Zemeckis.

REISSUE: “It Should Have Been Me” by Jayne Edwards – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Jayne Edwards is an 80s disco singer best known for a 1985 hit titled “Walk Away Satisfied” produced by Steve Algozino. Her catalogue is also lifted by several tracks produced by disco pioneer, Rick Gianatos in the early and late 80s. One of these singles is a cover of Yvonne Fair’s soul classic “It Should Have Been Me” – Jayne’s vocals takes the disco version to a place where it belongs. A wonderful production.

I have oddly taken the 1967 Mike Nichols film, “The Graduate” starring Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman and Katherine Ross into this Disco Video Mix pairing much of the drama in the disco track along with the film – reshaping and re-mending it into a fitting video mix.

The film was directed by Mike Nichols

REISSUE: "First Time Around" by Skyy - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The funk and disco band that made the 70's feel funky all over again. Producer Randy Muller (formerly of Brass Construction) brought to life a whole new dynasty of disco music with a guitar lickin' sound and new energy.

"First Time Around" is from their first LP simply titled "Skyy" from 1979.

My partner Ken gave me the concept of "First Time Around" paired up with the 1983 film, "Risky Business" starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay - since it was Tom's "first time around" in the film - the rest was easy!

REISSUE: “Strive” by Gloria Gaynor – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

From her 1984 LP, “I Am Gloria” comes “Strive” – a very high energy and upbeat dance track. Produced by Joel Diamond (Silver Blue, The Invitations, Lew Kirton, Joel Diamond Experience, Jack Black, etc.) and featured keyboards by Marcus Barone (“Savage Lover” by The Ring”).

Gloria gives another outstanding performance with a great message tagged along.

“A Chorus Line” –The Movie is featured as the visual for this Disco Video Mix – released in 1985 – it is the film version of the 12 times Tony Award winning Broadway play which ran for 6,137 performances. The late Michael Bennett (“Dreamgirls”) who passed in 1987 choreographed the original production.

Richard Attenborough directs the film.

REISSUE: “Love Is The Ultimate” by Ultimate – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Ultimate is a studio concept band from Juliano Salerni and Casablanca Records from 1978 – the fusion of the Euro-disco sound with a touch of the magic of Philly. This project was a big part of the disco surge in the late 70s and is a favorite hardcore classic.

“Love Is The Ultimate” is a side-long medley featuring three parts which are neatly rolled into a 12” remix by Howard Merritt.

I have taken the 1987 film “Dirty Dancing” starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze and transformed the dance sequences and love scenes into a disco extravaganza. The film works quite well with the romantic edge of Euro-disco. There is a bit or eroticism and the sensual aura that disco has always expressed well.

SAN FRANCISCO PRIDE ATTENDEES: Official Pride disco party at Deco Lounge

COURTESY PHOTO
Gay time: DJs Steve Fabus, left, and Sergio Fedasz appear Saturday at Go BANG! Go PRIDE at Deco Lounge.

Disco freaks and hipsters, drag queens and hot boys, sexy girls and San Francisco’s fiercest dancers are counting down to Go BANG! Go PRIDE! on Saturday at Deco Lounge.

It’s the official disco party of the official Pride weekend of the official gay mecca of the known universe. Described as “the largest annual gathering of LGBT people and allies in the nation,” the S.F. Pride Celebration and Parade this weekend is expected to host as many as 1 million attendees.

At least a few married gay couples are flying in to celebrate anniversaries at the event, says Sergio Fedasz, DJ and Go BANG! founder. “It’s going to be such a celebratory occasion. It’s like Christmas for us.”

Dress to sweat, plan to arrive early and expect flashy outfits, crazy styles and big smiles at what will be Go BANG!’s best-attended monthly installment of the year.

San Francisco icon and birthday boy Steve Fabus headlines the party; he’ll pump S.F., New York and Chicago disco from the 1970s and ’80s. The maligned child of soul and funk-disco continues to enjoy a 21st century renaissance, though it never really died, Fedasz says. Amid its late ’70s-early ’80s pillorying, disco’s drum machine and synthesizer-seasoned Chicago sound became house, spawning Chicago house and Detroit house. House DJs can sell out arenas in 2012.

“Early house — before house started being house — was disco,” Fedasz said.

Go BANG! started in 2008 at 222 Hyde with a supergroup of DJs who wanted to throw a queer-mixed disco revival night that was safe and friendly, with a family feel.

“I wanted to pay tribute to the glory days — to try to re-feel what you felt back in the day if you lived it — but keep it contemporary,” says Fedasz.

Deco gave Go BANG! a coveted Saturday slot and a year of runway, and they ran away with it, adding Fabus in 2010, becoming an official Pride event in 2011, and taking Go BANG! to Chicago and New York in 2012.

“Everything’s running smoothly. The party just keeps getting better and better,” Fedasz says. “We just feel really lucky and really privileged.”

IF YOU GO

REISSUE: “Spys” by Roni Griffith – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Roni Griffith was originally a vocalist from the ensemble in Kid Creole and The Coconuts – her solo venture left several disco classics from the early 80s including “Mondo Man”, “(The Best Part Of) Breaking Up”, “Desire” and “Spys”. Each project was produced by high energy veteran Bobby Orlando.

“Spys” was a single from her self-titled LP – I have taken the track and place it over the 1946 Alfred Hitchcock thriller/love story “Notorious” starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. The winding synthesizers follow the drama and suspense carefully – while leaving a few areas for the romantic edge which Hitchcock controlled so well.

"Love Spy" by Mike Mareen - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

High energy returned in the early 80's faithfully with artists like Mike Mareen - the electronic keyboards hovering over massive synthetic bass lines. Actually Mike had been around on the German disco music scene since 1974 this being his crossover to mega-disco.

"Love Spy" sounds similar to the Bobby Orlando formula with a bit more resources working along side Mike Mareen's crazy and outrageous themes. This one was a great return for him in 1986 and actually received dance radio play in the US. It is an adventure into electronic disco with more imagination and simplistic play. His earlier tracks included "Dancing In The Dark" and "Agent Of Liberty".

I have taken the 1997 film "Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery" starring Mike Myers, Elizabeth Hurley and Michael York into the Disco Video Mix and let the adventure takes it own coarse. It is a fun and silly trip - enjoy it while you can.

REISSUE: “Harlem Shuffle” by Rinder and Lewis – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Rinder and Lewis cover Bob and Earl’s 1973 soul classic “Harlem Shuffle” in their 1979 album “Warriors” – seems as though this team does their best at freestyle productions of classic rock and roll tunes as well as their unique flavor of disco music.

I have taken scenes from the 1989 film “Harlem Nights” starring Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx and Della Reese – the story of “Sugar” Ray owner of an illegal casino and the gangsters involved in taking it away. The action moves well with the low-key sound of the disco track and gives a bit of light to some of the beauties, as well as the sets.
